Rock men welcome Seton Hill Saturday

Slippery Rock will look to snap a four-game losing skid and continue its push for a PSAC playoff berth when Seton Hill visits Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team will look to snap a four-game losing skid when Seton Hill University visits Morrow Field House Saturday for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game. Tip is set for 3 p.m.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. SETON HILL
Slippery Rock owns a 7-5 edge in the all-time series that dates back to the 2007-08 season. The Rock won the first meeting between the teams earlier this year on the road to snap a two-game series win streak for the Griffins. SRU is 5-1 at home against Seton Hill with the lone loss coming last season.
 
LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock put together one of its best shooting performances of the season and picked up its fifth straight win with a 72-64 victory on the road at Seton Hill Dec. 30 earlier this season. The Rock shot 50.8 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from 3-point, connecting on seven shots from long range to offset the hot-shooting Griffins. Seton Hill shot 4.8 percent from the field and matched SRU with a 7-of-17 effort from 3-point. SRU posted a 40-28 edge in total rebounds.
 
Khyree Wooten led Slippery Rock with 21 points and eight rebounds and Naquil Jones added 20 points and five boards. Merdic Green, Jordan Marrow and Christal Malalu each scored eight points and Malalu also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Noah Davis led Seton Hill with 21 points, matching Wooten for game-high honors. Nathan Davis added 17 points and Tyler Bowling scored seven points. The Griffins got 29 of their 64 points from the bench.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• Slippery Rock began the 2017 portion of the schedule by picking up its sixth straight win, but has since dropped six of its last seven games to fall to 10-10 overall and 6-8 in PSAC games. The Rock are currently tied for fourth in the PSAC West standings.
 
• The Rock lead the PSAC and rank fifth in the nation in rebounding margin at +10.5 rebounds per game. SRU has been outrebounded just once in 20 games this season.
 
• SRU ranks first in the PSAC in scoring defense (4th in the nation), allowing just 63.6 points per game. The Rock rank first in the PSAC and 14th in the nation in field goal percentage defense with opponents shooting 40.1 percent from the field.
 
• SRU has allowed more than 70 points in only four games this season and three of those games were played on the road.
 
• Merdic Green has scored in double figures in seven straight games after reaching double figures just once in the seven games before this recent stretch. He is now averaging 10.9 points per game.
 
• Naquil Jones scored 20 or more points in five of seven games between Dec. 10 and Jan. 11, but has scored just 15 total points in his last three games combined. He still leads the team at 13.8 points per game and also hands out a team-high 3.3 assists per game.
 
• Christal Malalu has recorded 14 or more rebounds in four games this year and has two double-doubles in his last four games. Amir Maddred recorded his first double-double of the season at Gannon Wednesday with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
 
• Vinny Lasley didn't score a single point in four games from Dec. 30 to Jan. 9, but has reached double figures in three of the last five games. He is averaging 9.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over that stretch.
 
• The current four-game losing skid for SRU is just the fourth time in the nine-year career of Kevin Reynolds that SRU has dropped four straight games.   
 
• Slippery Rock is 92-26 (.789) in games played at home during the tenure of Kevin Reynolds.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS
• Seton Hill is 3-5 since its last meeting with Slippery Rock and enters Saturday's games with a 1-4 record in its last five games. The Grriffins are 8-10 overall on the year and are in sixth place in the PSAC West standings, one game behind SRU and Mercyhurst and one game ahead of California and Edinboro in a battle for the sixth and final playoff spot.
 
• Seton Hill ranks 14th in the league in scoring offense, averaging 73.9 points per game. Despite the low ranking in scoring offense, the Griffins are in the top half of the league in shooting percent, averaging 46.2 percent from the field to rank seventh in the league. SHU ranks ninth in the PSAC in scoring defense with opponents averaging 75.7 points per game.
 
• The Griffins are led by the combination of Spencer Casson and Noah Davis. Casson nearly averages a double-double with 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in addition to a league-high 70 blocks (3.9 per game). Davis is SHU's leading scorer at 17.5 points per game.
 
• Nathan Davis also averages 12.5 points per game and Fernando Slasamendi is scoring 8.9 points per game to round out the top scorers. Trevor Lecuona adds 5.1 points and a team-high 4.8 assists per game.
 
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will host California (Pa.) Wednesday in the annual "White Out" game with a tip set for 7:30 p.m. Official t-shirts are available now at the SGA Bookstore for just $5. A limited supply of shirts will also be available for sale at the game, while supplies last.
 
BLACK OUT
SRU's home game against Mercyhurst on Wednesday, Feb. 8 will be a "Black Out." The first 500 SRU students to show their ID at the gate will receive a free t-shirt, courtesy of Adidas and the Erie Sports Store.
