SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – American International College's Katie Lombardozzi scored a goal with under two minutes remaining regulation to lift the Yellow Jackets over the Slippery Rock University field hockey team, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in non-conference play.
Slippery Rock exits its first weekend of the season with a 1-1 record. American International improved to 2-0 with the victory.
A day after recording her first assist of the season,
Megan McKay netted her first goal of the young year. The goal was the 23rd of McKay's career; she is now two goals away from tying Marlene Hall (1985-88) as the program's all-time leading goal scorer.
McKay finished the contest with a pair of shots on goal.
Kailee Krupski,
Sam Geroski and
Renee Rosenblum registered shots on goal as well with Geroski also tallying an assist off of McKay's score.
Nicole Bream stopped a career-high five shots for The Rock and was SRU's goalie of record.
American International held advantages over Slippery Rock in total shots (11-6), shots on goal (7-5) and penalty corners (4-2).
Bream stopped American International's first three shots on goal to begin the game before AIC's Emma Heroth managed to beat The Rock's defense in the 22nd minute to take the lead midway through the opening half. Rosenblum nearly evened the score less than four minutes later, but her shot ricocheted off the post. Another Rosenblum shot late in the half was stopped by AIC goalie Taylor Ross as the Yellow Jackets took its one-goal lead into halftime.
Slippery Rock came out of the break hot when McKay took Geroski's pass and slipped the proceeding shot past Ross just 75 seconds into the second half.
However, SRU did not record a shot over the remainder of the game. The game appeared to be headed for overtime until Lombardozzi managed to score what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 68:17.
Slippery Rock will play its third game in four days when it hosts Seton Hill University 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
