SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Mansfield University, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at James Egli Field.
The win was Slippery Rock's third in its last four games, improving The Rock's record to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in PSAC matches. Mansfield drops to 1-5-1 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC. Slippery Rock is now 10-0 all-time against the Mounties.
The Rock was led on the day by
Andrea Felix, who registered her first goal of the season. Felix ended the match with two shots on goal, tying
Brooke Testa for the team lead on the day in shots on target. The goal was also the 21st in her career.
Maddy Tletski,
Tess Keeley and
Dara Demich all tallied shots on goal for Slippery Rock as well.
Felix's goal was setup by
Lynn Neef. The assist was Neef's first of the year.
Goalkeeper
Kylie Downs stopped a career-high six shots to earn her second shutout of the season. Downs is now 3-2 on the year with two shutouts, a 0.54 goals against average and a .833 save percentage.
For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over Mansfield in total shots (14-7), shots on goal (7-6) and corner kicks (8-3).
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Slippery Rock took the lead just 16 seconds into the second half when Neef played a cross into Felix, who proceeded to send a header past Mansfield goalkeeper Rachel Fox for the game's only goal.
Mansfield tried to counter with four shots following Felix's goal, but Downs was able to stop all four attempts to finish off the shutout and secure the win.
Slippery Rock will look for its third win in as many games when it hosts Gannon University 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27.
