AMHERST, N.Y.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team split a pair of games Saturday at the Hyatt Place Volleyball Classic hosted by Daemen College in Amherst, New York.
Slippery Rock earned a 3-0 win against Assumption before losing a close one to the College of Saint Rose 3-2 later in the afternoon. The Rock went 3-1 at the weekend tournament to improve to 5-3 overall.
Brooke Bostwick registered 23 kills between the two matches, while
Leah Jones had 18. Jones finished the weekend with 38 total kills and 47 digs to be named to the All-Tournament Team.
Match One: Slippery Rock 3, Assumption 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21)
Slippery Rock got out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before Assumption scored four straight points to take the last lead they would hold for the remainder of the set. The Rock went on to score six unanswered points and held off a late Greyhound rally to earn a 25-21 victory in the opening set.
In the second set, SRU went on two five-point runs and closed out the set with a kill by
Shayla Ray and two Assumption errors to get the 25-18 win.
Assumption scored five straight points midway through the third set thanks in part to four Rock errors to take a narrow 15-13 lead and force a Slippery Rock timeout. The Rock battled back to tie it up five more times and proceeded to close out the set with a 5-1 run to take the 25-21 win.
Bostwick wrapped up the match with 10 kills and three blocks, while Jones came up with seven kills and a team-high 15 digs.
Zoe Rivet had 16 assists and
Courtney Oberlander had two service aces.
Match Two: Saint Rose 3, Slippery Rock 2 (13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 15-8)
After earning a comfortable 25-13 win in the first set, Slippery Rock struggled to gain traction in the second set. Saint Rose got out to a 15-10 lead and Slippery Rock would get no closer than 17-14 as the Golden Knights went on to win set two 25-18.
The Rock bounced back with a close 25-23 victory in the third set, but Saint Rose charged back in the fourth set with a five-point run followed by an eight point run to tie it up 2-2 with a 25-15 win.
Slippery Rock led the fifth set 7-4 until Jennifer Gundrum had three straight kills to lead Saint Rose on a five-point run. The Golden Knights closed out the final set with five unanswered points to win 15-8.

Bostwick led The Rock for the second time on Saturday with a team-high 13 kills. Jones continued her impressive weekend with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Oberlander had a match-high 28 digs.
Rivet had 24 assists against the Golden Knights and
Mattie Taggart had three blocks to round out The Rock's top performers.
Slippery Rock will be back in action next weekend at the Wheeling Jesuit/West Liberty Invitational where they will face Fairmont State (Sept. 16 at 11 a.m.), Wheeling Jesuit (Sept. 16 at 3 p.m.), UVa.-Wise (Sept. 17 at 11 a.m.) and West Liberty (Sept. 17 at 3 p.m.).
