KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a tough 3-1 contest at ninth-ranked Kutztown University on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, The Rock drops to 2-2 on the season while Kutztown improves its record to 3-0.
Slippery Rock tied the game at 1-1 to start the second period on a goal scored by senior
Megan McKay, but it was not enough as Kutztown scored two more goals over the remainder of regulation for the victory.
McKay's goal was her third of the season and 25th of her career. She is now tied for first place in Rock history in career goals with Marlene Hall (1985-88).
For the game, SRU tallied four shots on goal with McKay,
Hannah Downing,
Renee Rosenblum and
Madison Krajewski each placing one attempt on target.
Junior goalkeeper
Nicole Bream made a career high 12 saves in 70:00 minutes played.
Kutztown struck first with a goal scored by Megan Tiwold off a rebound midway through the first half at 15:48. The goal would be the only score of the first period as the Slippery Rock defense was able to fend off six shots and two corners to keep its deficit at one goal going into the break.
Just over a minute into the second period, SRU scored on a shot across the body from McKay, who entered the scoring circle after making a long run into the Kutztown zone, to tie the game 1-1.
However, Kutztown ended any thoughts of a Rock upset when it re-took the lead at 53:23 on a goal from Kyra Wozniak off of an assist from Madison Stewart. Wozniak struck again at 65:01 on a cross into the circle from Micaela Beaty for an insurance goal en route to the victory..
For the game, Kutztown held edges over The Rock in total shots (31-5), shots on goal (15-5) and corners (10-3).
SRU is back in action 4 p.m. Sept. 14 against No. 2 Millersville at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
