GREENSBURG, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team swept Seton Hill in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Slippery Rock took game one 4-0 before earning a 5-4 victory in eight innings in game two.
With the wins, Slippery Rock improves to 18-17 overall and 7-7 in conference play, while Seton Hill drops to 12-24 overall and 5-9 in league action. The crucial sweep puts SRU in possession of third place in the PSAC West with six games still left to play.
Stacey Herzog led the offense with four hits, two runs and an RBI, while
Caitlin Baxter had three hits and one run. Additionally,
Ashley Samluk had two hits, one run, two RBI and a home run.
Brooke Dawson (7-7) registered a complete game victory in the opener after recording her third shutout of the year. She allowed five hits and had four strikeouts.
Carly DeRose (8-5) picked up the win in the nightcap after allowing three runs on seven hits across 5.2 innings pitched. Dawson started the game and pitched for 2.1 innings, allowing one run and one strikeout.
Game One: Slippery Rock 4, Seton Hill 0In the opener, Samluk got things going for The Rock in the fourth inning when she smacked her fourth home run of the season to give SRU a 1-0 lead.
Slippery Rock registered two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth.
Katie Kaiser's RBI and
Allie Fischer's sacrifice fly highlighted the two innings.
Seton Hill recorded two hits in the seventh inning, but Dawson got herself out of a one-out, two-on jam to preserve the shutout.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 5, Seton Hill 4 (8 Innings)With Seton Hill leading 1-0, The Rock tied it up in the fifth inning when Samluk hit an RBI double to score Kaiser.
Slippery Rock surrendered three hits and allowed two on base in the seventh inning, but Dawson got out of another jam and send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Herzog sparked The Rock's four-run, three-hit surge with an RBI single that scored Baxter, who reached base on her fifth double of the season. Herzog scored on a Seton Hill throwing error and
Megan Maloney had an RBI single that scored
Caitlyn MacKelvey, who pinch ran for
Lauren Hawley. Kaiser scored
Kailey Myers on a sacrifice fly to right field to give SRU a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
Seton Hill registered three hits and scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Dawson forced Paige Hertzog to fly out to left field to get out of the inning and secure the two-game sweep.
Slippery Rock continues its weekend action Sunday afternoon at No. 10 California (Pa.). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
