Rock softball stumbles against Gannon

The SRU softball team fell in a doubleheader sweep to Gannon Wednesday afternoon from McConnell Family Stadium.

ERIE, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team was upended 11-1 and 4-3 by Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Wednesday afternoon from McConnell Family Stadium.

The Rock surrendered six runs in the first inning of the opener and could never gain traction in an 11-1 loss to the Golden Knights in five innings. Gannon scored four unanswered runs and held off a seventh inning rally by SRU in the nightcap to defeat The Rock 4-3.

With the losses, Slippery Rock falls to 14-15 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC West. Gannon improved to 14-14 and 6-6 in the conference with the wins.

Game One: Gannon 11, Slippery Rock 1 (Five Innings)
Slippery Rock could never get on track in the opener as Gannon got to sophomore starter Paige Flore for six runs in the first inning and five runs in the third en route to the 11-1 win.

A bright spot for The Rock in game one was sophomore Emily Nagle, who drove in The Rock's lone run in the fifth inning. Seniors Katie Kaiser and Stacey Herzog also recorded two hits apiece in the loss.

Flore gave up 12 hits and 11 runs in her 2.2 innings pitched. Sophomore Brooke Dawson came in for 1.1 innings of relief and struck out two.

Game Two: Gannon 4, Slippery Rock 3
Gannon scored three runs in the third inning and one in the sixth to hold a steady lead. Trailing 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning, The Rock showed some life by scoring three runs, sparked by senior Megan Maloney's RBI single to score Herzog, who reached base on a double. Kaiser homered to left field to score Maloney and pull The Rock within one run. With two outs, SRU recorded two more hits before ending the inning.

Dawson took the loss in game two after pitching four innings and striking out five. Junior Carly DeRose came in for two innings and struck out two.

The Rock continues PSAC West action Thursday against Edinboro. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from the SRU Softball Complex.
