CLERMONT, Fla.- The Slippery Rock University softball team split a pair of games Sunday from the National Training Center Tournament in Clermont, Florida.
Slippery Rock opened Day Two with a 5-4 comeback win against Saint Joseph's College before dropping a close one to the University of Minnesota Duluth 3-2.
Slippery Rock's record moves to 5-4 overall on the year. The team will face Upper Iowa University (3 p.m. on Field 4) and Winona State University (7 p.m. on Field 3) tomorrow at Hancock Park.
Senior
Ashley Samluk led The Rock offensively on Day Two, going 4-for-7 with one run, two doubles and two RBI. Senior
Katie Kaiser complimented Samluk by going 3-for-8 with a home run and a triple on the day.
Junior pitcher
Carly DeRose came in for relief in Game One to throw 4.2 shutout innings and earn the win. DeRose gassed three and allowed just one hit. Sophomore
Brooke Dawson took the loss in Game Two after pitching six full innings. She struck out one, walked three and allowed four hits.
Game One: Slippery Rock 5 – Saint Joe's 4Saint Joe's homered in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead before Kaiser cranked one of her own over the fence in left center during the third to make it a tie game.
The Pumas scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of that same inning to lead The Rock 4-1. Samluk hit her first of two doubles in the fourth inning and scored on an RBI single by sophomore
Amanda Brush to pull SRU within two runs.
The Rock had a big fifth inning, recording four hits and three runs. Sophomore
Allie Fischer doubled and sophomore Kaylee PIstorius singled to score freshman
Megan Brown, who pinch-ran for Fischer. Senior
Megan Maloney recorded a hit and Samluk hit her second double of the game to score two runners and give The Rock a 5-4 lead that it would hold onto.
Game Two: Minnesota Duluth 3 – Slippery Rock 2Duluth recorded a run in the second inning that The Rock would quickly respond to in the bottom of the same inning. Junior
Caitlin Baxter singled and scored senior
Stacey Herzog, who reached base on an error to tie it up.
Sophomore
Emily Nagle singled in the third and Maloney scored her on a double. Unfortunately, SRU left two runners on base that inning, which turned out to be the difference in the game as the Bulldogs recorded two hits and scored two runs in the fifth inning to earn the win. Â Â Â
