Rock drops two at Dinwiddie Invite

Slippery Rock lost a pair of games Sunday at the Dinwiddie Invitational in Colonial Heights, Virginia to West Chester University and Philadelphia University.

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team lost a pair of games Sunday at the Dinwiddie Invitational in Colonial Heights, Virginia to West Chester University and Philadelphia University.

Slippery Rock (1-6) lost to West Chester (3-0), 16-3, in a game that was much closer than the final score would indicate for much of the contest before falling in its final game of the day to Philadelphia (1-2), 13-7.

Tyler Walters continued to swing a hot bat for The Rock Sunday. Over the two games Walters went a combined 5-for-9 with three runs scored, five RBI and one home run. Through seven games in 2016 Walters is hitting .526 with six runs scored, eight RBI and two home runs. Ty Zimmerman also had hits in both games in addition to scoring a pair of runs.

Slippery Rock had a 2-1 lead on West Chester heading into the fifth inning, but the Rams went on a tear, scoring 14 runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 15-2 lead over SRU en route to the eventual 13-run victory.

Walters was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and one home run against West Chester. Joe Campagna also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one walk. Zimmerman tallied the only other Rock hit in the opener.

Jon Anderson (1-1) got the start for Slippery Rock against WCU. He lasted 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts.

The Slippery Rock-Philadelphia contest was a pitching showcase through the first five innings as SRU's Shawn Holman and Philadelphia's Jonathon Gottschall both allowed only one run on five hits. Holman, who would leave after five innings, also struck out three batters while scattering five walks in the no decision.

However, the Rams would get to The Rock's bullpen in the sixth for seven runs to push their advantage out to 7-1. Slippery Rock attempted to mount a comeback by scoring six runs in the following three innings, but Philadelphia countered with three runs of its own in the seventh and two more in the ninth to secure the win.

Frankie Jezioro continued his solid start to his collegiate career with a 4-for-5, three-run, one-RBI, two-double game against Philadelphia. Walters produced two hits and three RBI while Alex Bell drove in a pair of runs on one hit as well for SRU.

Andrew Null (0-1) was the pitcher of record Slippery Rock. He allowed seven runs on three hits and two walks in 0.2 innings pitched.

Slippery Rock concludes its time at the Dinwiddie Invitational 10 a.m. Monday against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival California (Pa.).
