CALIFORNIA, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team was swept by California University of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in California, Pa.
The Vulcans got out to a 2-0 lead over The Rock with close wins of 25-23 and 33-31 before cruising to a 25-15 win in the third frame to complete the sweep.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 8-11 overall and 1-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. California improves to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
Leah Jones led SRU in the loss with a 13-kill, 13-dig double-double.
Lamija Alisic registered 10 kills, while
Brooke Bostwick had two service aces and six kills to round out the point-scorers.
Haley Defibaugh and
Zoe Rivet split setting duties with 16 and 11 assists, respectfully.
Courtney Oberlander had 21 digs in the loss, while
Kristen C. Smith had another 13.
In the first set, California held an early 8-4 lead before Slippery Rock scored five unanswered points behind Bostwick's pair of aces to take a 9-8 lead. The Vulcans went on to outscore The Rock 3-1 before SRU had another five-point run to lead 15-11. The teams exchanged individual kills before the hosts scored four straight points to tie up the set 16-16 and call for a Slippery Rock timeout. The teams battled it out the rest of the frame, but California closed out the set with three straight points to overcome The Rock 25-23.
Slippery Rock battled with California again in the second set and tied it up 13 times during the first half of the set until California overcame a 19-18 Slippery Rock lead with four straight points to take a 22-19 lead. Later on, The Rock battled back from a 24-21 deficit with a four-point run of its own to take a narrow 25-24 lead. The teams continued to battle it out and tied it up seven more times before California scored two points on SRU errors to win 33-31.
The Vulcans broke away from a 9-7 lead in the third set with seven unanswered points to stretch their lead to nine points. SRU answered that run by showing some life with four straight points behind a pair of kills from Jones to cut it to 16-11. California outscored Slippery Rock 9-4 down the stretch to come away with a 25-15 win.
Slippery Rock will welcome Edinboro University to Morrow Field House in the PSAC Northwest opener on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
