JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team closed its 2016 season out with a 3-1 win at Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon.
Slippery Rock ends the year at 5-9-2 overall and 4-5-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. Pitt-Johnstown drops to 4-12-0 overall and 1-10-0 in league matches with the loss.
SRU held commanding advantages over Pitt-Johnstown on the day in every statistical category including total shots (17-8), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (7-3).
Sean Hobbins,
Anthony Werth and
Jacob Thiel all scored goals for The Rock Saturday. The three-goal game was a season-best for Slippery Rock. Thiel's goal was his team-best fourth of the season.
The trio of
George Oakley,
Justin Minda and
Arran Robertson were all credited for assists as well. Oakley's assist was his team-leading fourth of the year.
The freshmen goalkeeping duo of
Matt Hunsberger and
Liam Glowaski split time in the win. Hunsberger earned his first collegiate win after stopping two shots over 45 minutes in the first half before giving way to Glowaski for the final 45 minutes of play.
Slippery Rock put the game away early with a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of play. Hobbins scored the game's first goal off of an assist by Oakley early in the eighth minute. Just under two minutes later Werth scored on a through ball by Minda to give SRU a 2-0 lead just 9:09 into the opening half. Minda's assist was his third of 2016.
Thiel concluded The Rock's scoring barrage with a goal off of Robertson's cross at 29:22 to give SRU a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Pitt-Johnstown avoided the shutout thanks to Colin Michalski's goal five minutes into the second half, but the Mountain Cats never truly threatened The Rock as SRU proceeded to hold UPJ to just three shots, all of which were off target, over the remainder of the game en route to the two-goal victory.
Oakley finished the contest with a team-best three shots. Hobbins, Thiel,
Nick Sodini,
Enrique Trevino and
Adolfo Segura all tallied two shots apiece in the triumph as well.
