Rock falls to Seton Hill in overtime, 3-2

A valiant comeback bid by Slippery Rock came up just short in a 3-2 overtime loss to Seton Hill Wednesday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A valiant comeback bid by the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team came up just short in a 3-2 overtime loss to Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Seton Hill's Tom Urquhart scored the game's first goal early in the third minute to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead that they would carry into halftime and through much of the second half until Arran Robertson evened the score for SRU with a goal at 65:32.

Seton Hill regained the lead eight minutes later when Harrison Howes took advantage of a generous ball spot on a Rock foul to send in a shot from the top of the box for a goal. Following the score SRU goalkeeper Jonathan Sharp received a red card, forcing The Rock to finish the game with 10 men. on the field

The one-man disadvantage did not seem to faze The Rock, as SRU controlled possession and were the aggressors for nearly the rest of the game following the card.

Playing a man down and still trailing by by one goal with under four minutes to play, Andre Morgan put a pass into the left of the SHU zone to Enrique Trevino who then displayed great athleticism with a bicycle kick that cruised past Seton Hill goalkeeper Austin Iddon to tie the game at 2-2.

The Griffins managed two more shots over the final minutes of regulation, but one attempt sailed wide and a prayer from over 50 yards out with seconds remaining on the clock was easily stopped by Steven Rerick, who came on in Sharp's absence, to send the contest into overtime.

Slippery Rock had the first shot in overtime, but Justin Minda's attempt was saved by Iddon. Trevino later attempted another shot in the 97th minute, but it too was stopped by Iddon. Seton Hill was finally able escape Egli Field with the win thanks to a goal by Curtis Gallagher with 2:58 remaining in the opening overtime period.

The goals by Trevino and Robertson were the first of their respective careers at Slippery Rock. Morgan's assist was also his first point at The Rock.

Minda produced a game-high four shots. Robertson, Trevino, Mike Pcholinsky and George Oakley all had two shots as well with Morgan, Anthony Werth and Patrick Sullivan each tallying one attempt.

Sharp stopped two shots and gave up two goals in 76:10. Rerick made three saves and surrendered one goal over 20:52.

Wednesday's game was Slippery Rock's third overtime game of the year and sixth one-goal loss of 2016.

Slippery Rock (3-9-2, 2-5-2 PSAC) and Seton Hill (9-6, 6-3 PSAC) recorded 15 total shots and eight shots on goal apiece with the Griffins also holding a narrow 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Slippery Rock will close out its 2016 home schedule 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Egli Field against Lock Haven University on Senior Day.
