SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team nearly rallied back from a three-goal deficit, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss against Le Moyne College in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon at James Egli Field.
Jacob Thiel and
Adolfo Segura both scored goals for Slippery Rock (3-7-2) while
Justin Minda,
Devin Hoffman and
Mike Pcholinsky all had assists. Thiel's goal was his team-leading third of the season while Segura's goal was the first of his career.
Le Moyne (7-2-1) scored three consecutive goals over the first 62 minutes of play to take a seemingly commanding lead into the final stages of Tuesday's game before Slippery Rock's late comeback bid almost came to fruition.
Slippery Rock scored its first goal of the contest at 75:06 when Minda played a ball in from the left side to Thiel who finished the shot just inside the far post. Minda's assist was his second of the season.
SRU continued to pressure Le Moyne through the next six minutes and eventually earned a penalty kick when Segura was fouled in the Dolphins' zone. Pcholinsky took the shot, but it was saved by backup goalkeeper Matt Perry, who made a diving stop to his left, to keep the Le Moyne lead at two goals with 7:20 remaining in regulation.
Following the penalty kick Slippery Rock recorded two more shots, an attempt by
Devin Hoffman that went wide in the 85th minute and Segura's shot which found the back of the next with seven seconds left to play to cut The Rock's deficit down to just one goal at 3-2. The goal was placed into Segura off of back-to-back passes by Hoffman and Pcholinsky.
However, there just wasn't enough time left for The Rock as Le Moyne proceeded to put the ball in play to run out the clock following Segura's goal and escape with the one-goal victory.
For the game, Slippery Rock recorded 13 shots.
George Oakley recorded a team-high three attempts with Pcholinsky and
Nick Schindehette each tallying two shots apiece. Theil, Segura, Hoffman,
Enrique Trevino,
Arran Robertson and
Josh Allman all had shots as well.
Goalkeeper
Steven Rerick stopped five shots and allowed two goals in the first half before giving way to freshman
Matt Hunsberger, who had one save and allowed one goal over 45 minutes in second half in what was his first collegiate appearance.
Le Moyne was led on the day by Salar Faryar, who scored two goals in the victory.
Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play 2:30 p.m. Saturday at West Chester University.
