Rock drops 3-0 decision to #8 Kutztown

Slippery Rock dropped a conference game against No. 8 Kutztown Saturday afternoon, 3-0.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team fell to eighth-ranked Kutztown University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, 3-0.

The loss puts Slippery Rock's record at 3-7 overall and 0-3 in league play while Kutztown improves to 6-3 on the season and 2-1 in PSAC play.

Senior Megan McKay, junior Haylee Underwood, sophomore Hannah Downing and freshman Savanna Robinson each recorded a shot for Slippery Rock. Sophomore Liz Wolfe and senior Kayla Mack each registered two defensive saves and junior goalkeeper Nicole Bream recorded five saves.

Slippery Rock's four defensive saves puts its season total at seven, which is second in the PSAC behind Mansfield (8). The four defensive saves were the most in a single-game by a Rock team since it tallied four defensive saves in a 2-1 win against East Stroudsburg during the 2014 season (39 games).

Slippery Rock nearly took an early lead when Underwood fired a shot from the center of the Kutztown zone in the 13th minute, but the attempt was stopped by Golden Bear goalkeeper Chardonnay Hope.

Kutztown went on to take a lead less than two minutes later at 13:40 on a goal from Madison Stewart as she dribbled into the SRU zone and found the back of the cage giving KU a 1-0 advantage.

In the 20th minute the Golden Bears scored again on a penalty stroke goal from Morgan Aldinger. Nine minutes later, KU scored on a pass from Courtney Konowal that deflected off a Rock defender's stick into the goal putting the Golden Bears up, 3-0.

Slippery Rock's next best chance to score in the first period came on a shot from Robinson, but it was blocked as Kutztown took a three-goal lead into the break.

The Golden Bears fired five shots on goal in the second period but did not score again. The Rock almost got on the board at 61:05 when Downing fired a shot that was blocked by a KU defender as Kutztown held on to its 3-0 lead throughout the second period en route to the victory.

Slippery Rock will look to put an end to its losing streak when it hosts Mansfield in its annual Corners for Cancer game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
