Rock beats Mansfield, 2-0, for first PSAC win

Slippery Rock defeated Mansfield 2-0 to record its first conference win Tuesday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team shutout Mansfield University, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play in its annual Corners for Cancer game.

The Rock (4-7, 1-3 PSAC) was not able to get its first goal until the second period, but recorded two within two minutes of each other to seal the win. Freshman Hannah Shirk recorded her first career goal, while senior Megan McKay tallied her seventh goal of 2016. Freshman Savanna Robinson assisted on Shirk's goal while senior Kailee Krupski setup McKay's goal. It was the third assist of the season for both players.

Mansfield's (1-10, 0-3 PSAC) best scoring opportunity came early in the game at 6:10, but sophomore Liz Wolfe stopped a shot by Katie Lipski. For Wolfe, it was her fifth defensive save of the season, which leads SRU.

The Rock's best chance to score in the first period was at 29:11 when junior Kayla Mack fired a shot, but it was kicked away by goalkeeper Laura Lawson. Despite the 0-0 score, Slippery Rock held the advantage in shots (10-5) heading into the break.

Both teams remained scoreless for most of the second period. At 60:05, SRU head coach Julie Swiney called a timeout. Just five minutes after the timeout, The Rock got on the board when a shot from Robinson hopped over Lawson and was deflected into the cage by Shirk to put Slippery Rock up 1-0 with under 10 minutes to play in regulation.

SRU added an insurance goal just two minutes later at 67:30 when McKay went on a breakaway off of a great pass from Krupski and beat the keeper for the goal to put SRU ahead for the games final score, 2-0.

The Rock held advantages in shots on goal (17-6) and penalty corners (8-6). SRU's eight penalty corners will help benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. This is the fifth consecutive year in which SRU has participated in the Corners for Cancer initiative. McKay and freshman Brenna McGovern-Lind led SRU with four shots on goal each. Mack and senior Renee Rosenblum each tallied two shots on goal as well.

Junior goalkeeper Nicole Bream made five saves and recorded her third shutout of the season.

The win was SRU's first PSAC victory of the season and improved its record to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in league play. Mansfield falls to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

Slippery Rock will head back on the road for its next contest at No. 3 Shippensburg University 11 a.m. Saturday.
