ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 4-0 win against Mercyhurst University on the road Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.
Slippery Rock has now scored four goals in back-to-back games. Prior to this season, Slippery Rock had not scored at least four goals in consecutive games since the 2007 season.
The win improves The Rock's record to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Lakers fall to 2-3-2 both overall and in conference matches with the loss.
Sophomore midfielder
Tess Keeley led the way for Slippery Rock Wednesday with one goal and one assist off the bench. The goal was Keeley's first of the season while the assist was her team-leading third of the year.
Freshman forward
Brooke Testa and junior forward
Dara Demich also added goals for The Rock. Demich has been nearly unstoppable as of late with four goals and one assist in her last three games. The hot streak has pushed Demich into the team lead in both points (14) and goals (six). Testa's goal was the second of her young career.
Freshman goalkeeper
Charlotte Elrod picked up her third shutout of the season after stopping three Laker attempts.
Slippery Rock put the game out of reach early with three first-half goals. After a scoreless start to the first half, SRU broke the 0-0 tie on a Mercyhurst own goal when a Laker defender inadvertently put the ball in MU's net at 22:03. SRU struck in earnest 18 minutes later when Keeley made a run down the left side of the field before beating Laker goalie Ellie McDougall to the left of the net in the 41st minute.
Just over a minute later, Testa made it a 3-0 contest when she scored off of a corner kick from freshman midfielder
Mariah Varner in the middle of the box at 41:54 to send SRU into halftime leading by three goals.
Demich added an insurance goal off of a double assist by Keeley and senior midfielder
Crysta Ganter seven minutes into the second half. The Rock's defense proceeded to close out the win by not allowing a Mercyhurst shot for the final 44 minutes of play.
For the game, Slippery Rock outshot Mercyhurst 11-4. Rachel Fulton led the Lakers with two shots on goal.
The victory increased The Rock's current win streak against Mercyhurst to four games. SRU has not allowed a goal against the Lakers since the 2010 season, a span of five games.
Slippery Rock continues road play 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Mansfield University. SRU is 8-0 all-time against the Mountaineers.
