SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team had its perfect Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record snapped Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Millersville University at James Egli Field.
The loss ends SRU's two-match winning streak and drops The Rock's record to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. Millersville improves to 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in PSAC matches.
Peter Boylan paced The Rock in the loss by scoring his first goal of the season and taking a team-high three shots, two of which were on target.
Stephen McConahy added an assist while
Mike Ilodigwe,
Patrick Sullivan,
Enrique Trevino and
Nick Kutcher all added shots on goal as well.
Goalkeeper
Kyle Hoffer made six saves in the loss.
The Rock got on the scoreboard first when Boylan took a cross from McConahy and beat the Millersville goalie with a low kick in the 33rd minute. However, the Marauders quickly responded with a successful penalty kick by Jaime Vazquez to tie the contest at 1-1 in the 36th minute.
After a scoreless 20 minutes to start the second period, Millersville came away with what would turn out to be the game-winning goal at 64:57 when Marcus Frangakis beat Hoffer with a shot from the top of the zone.
Slippery Rock proceeded to push forward and fire off six more shots, but couldn't quite find the equalizer as Millersville hung on for the 2-1 victory.
For the game Millersville outshot The Rock 15-10 and held a narrow 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Slippery Rock will look to return to its winning ways when it travels to Mercyhurst Sept. 23 for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
