Game Two Box Score SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team increased its winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep against Gannon University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play Monday afternoon at Jack Critchfield Park.
Slippery Rock never trailed in game one on the way to a 9-2 victory. SRU fought back from a two-run deficit to force extra innings in game two before completing its comeback in the eighth by taking advantage of a Golden Knight fielding miscue for a 7-6 win.
The sweep improves The Rock's record to 17-12 on the year overall and 8-8 in conference competition. The losses drop Gannon's record to 10-20 overall and 2-14 in league games.
Adam Urbania continued his hot streak by going a combined 5-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBI and one home run. Urbania, who has now hit safely in 16 consecutive games, sent game two into extra innings when he connected on his fourth homer of the year with
Tyler Walters on base.
GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 9 – Gannon 2The opener was never in doubt as the pitching duo of
Jon Anderson (2-1) and
Anton Constantino combined to only allow two runs on five hits while SRU's offense used four extra-base hits to register the seven-run triumph.
Slippery Rock's offense got started early when it loaded the bases in the second inning.
Jordan Faretta proceeded to put a ball in play that was mishandled by Gannon's right fielder to net SRU two runs. Slippery Rock posted its third run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by
Jake Nogalo for the quick 3-0 edge.
After Sean Sutton hit an RBI-double for the only blemish on Anderson's day in the top of the fourth inning, SRU struck again in the bottom half of the frame with six-runs.
Carson Kessler and Faretta tallied a double and a single, respectively, to start the inning before Nogalo struck a bases-clearing triple to right field. Following a sacrifice fly by Walters that plated Nogalo, Urbania kept the inning alive with a single and was promptly brought home on an
Alex Bell home run.
Logan Brown capped off the inning with another homer, his team-high seventh of the year and sixth in his last six games.
Anderson threw a scoreless fifth inning before giving way to Constantino, who went on to get the final six outs of the day while only surrendering one unearned run in the process to secure the 9-2 Rock win.
Eight of The Rock's nine starters had hits in game one including multi-hit outings from Nogalo (2-for-3) and Urbania (2-for-3). Nogalo also drove in three runs.
GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 7 – Gannon 6 (Eight Innings)It appeared as if Slippery Rock would have to settle for the split when Gannon scored two runs in he sixth inning of game two to take a 5-3 lead into the seventh. However, with one runner on base in The Rock's final set of at-bats, Urbania swung on the first pitch he saw and sent the ball over the left field fence to tie the game.
Gannon added one run in the eighth, but could not put The Rock away as
Kyle Vozar and Kessler both got on to put runners at first and second with one out to start the bottom of the eighth. Faretta then delivered the game-tying hit with an RBI-single to left field that scored pinch runner
Davis Smith.
With the game now tied at 6-6 and runners on first and third Gannon pitcher Kyle Cox (0-2) attempted a pickoff throw to first, but the first baseman wasn't covering the base which resulted in a bad throw that allowed Kessler to score the game-winning run and give SRU a 7-6 win and the four-game series sweep over the Golden Knights.
Seven of Slippery Rock's nine hits in the nightcap belonged to the trio of Walters (2-for-4), Urbania (3-for-3) and Vozar (2-for-4). One of Walters' hits was a home run, his fifth of the season.
James Divosevic (2-1) pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Slippery Rock to earn the win.
Alex Pantuso and
Preston Falascino both threw three innings apiece to start the contest. Pantuso struck out three batters and allowed three runs while Falascino gave up two runs before Divosevic came in.
Slippery Rock looks to continue its winning ways when it hosts Seton Hill for a doubleheader Friday at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Rock's scheduled doubleheader against Mansfield, which was to be played Tuesday, was canceled.
