Rock loses two to No. 5 Seton Hill

Slippery Rock dropped a pair of PSAC-West games to fifth ranked Seton Hill on Saturday at the SHU Baseball Complex in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team dropped a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division games to fifth ranked Seton Hill University on Saturday at the SHU Baseball Complex in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock (17-14, 8-10 PSAC-West) lost to Seton Hill (30-4, 17-1 PSAC-West), 11-4, in game one before fielding errors helped erase a seven-run Rock lead in game two's 13-12 loss. The sweep extended Seton Hill winning streak to 19 games.

SRU was led on the day by freshman Tyler Walters, who went a combined 5-for-9 with two runs, one home run and three RBI. Walters is now batting .382 in his first collegiate season and has drove in 23 runs on 39 hits. With at least 14 games left in the year, Walters already ranks eighth all-time in hits by a Slippery Rock freshman.

GAME ONE: Seton Hill 11 – Slippery Rock 4
Seton Hill scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to its seven-run victory in the opener.

For the first time in 2015, Slippery Rock's opposition truly got to No. 1 starter Ryan Oglesby (3-3), who allowed 11 runs, on 11 hits in five innings. After surrendering eight runs in the first two innings Oglesby, who struck out five batters on the day, threw two scoreless innings before allowing a three-run home run to Cody Herald in the fifth inning.

Slippery Rock relief pitcher Zac Anderson tossed a scoreless sixth inning to round out the contest for the SRU pitching staff.

The Slippery Rock offense had just two hits through the first four innings before Preston Falascino broke the shutout by hitting a solo home run, his fifth of the year, in the fifth inning.

SRU added three more runs in the sixth off of a two-run home run by Adam Urbania and a sacrifice fly by Jordan Faretta that plated Alex Bell from third base. However, Seton Hill pitcher Mike Bittel (6-2) regrouped to record the final out of the inning to leave the bases loaded before retiring the SRU side on three straight fly outs in the seventh to earn the win.

Falascino went 2-for-3 with one run, a home run and one RBI in the opener. Walters was 2-for-4 with one run. Urbania's homer was his fifth of 2015. Nick Sell was 3-for-4 with two runs, one home run and three RBI for the Griffins.

GAME TWO: Seton Hill 13 – Slippery Rock 12
Slippery Rock appeared to have secured the doubleheader split when it jumped out to a 10-3 lead against the Griffins in game two, but Seton Hill came back to score 10 runs in the final two innings to tally a 13-12 victory.

The Rock and Griffins traded two-run frames in the first inning. Walters launched a two-run homer for SRU while SHU countered with back-to-back run-scoring hits from Chris Miller and Logan Urtz.

Following a scoreless third inning, Slippery Rock scored one run in the fourth on an RBI-double by Jack Graham and three more runs in the fifth via another Walters run-scoring hit as well as run-producing hits off of the bats of Logan Brown and Carson Kessler, who has hit safely in seven consecutive games.

Seton Hill got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Slippery Rock seemingly put the game out of reach by scoring four more runs to start the sixth inning.

The dangerous Seton Hill offense finally came alive in the sixth inning, scoring eight runs to take an 11-10 lead on SRU. Three Rock errors led to two Seton Hill runs and helped force Falascino, who started and pitched well in game two, from the game. Following the pitching replacement, the heart of Seton Hill's batting order rattled off six unearned runs thanks in part to three home runs before Slippery Rock could get out of the inning.

Unfazed by Seton Hill's rally, The Rock's offense fought back in the seventh to retake the lead. Slippery Rock loaded the bases for Bell, who delivered a clutch two-out single to left field that plated Jake Nogalo and Ty Zimmerman to put The Rock ahead 12-11.

Rock reliever Anton Constantino came on in the seventh and quickly got the first two outs in the inning before a single by Pat McCarthy gave Seton Hill life. Following The Rock's season-high fifth error of the game and a wild pitch, Sell hit a double that sailed over Urbania's head in centerfield to score both runs for the 13-12 Seton Hill win.

Slippery Rock netted 16 hits in game two, its second highest total of the year. Six Rock batters had multi-hit game with Walters leading the way on a 3-for-5, three-RBI day that included his sixth home run of the year. Nogalo, Bell, Graham, Zimmerman and Jordan Faretta all had two-hit outings as well.

Urbania went 1-for-4 and scored two runs to extend his hitting streak to an impressive 18 games.

Falascino threw 112 pitches over 5.2 innings, striking out three batters and allowing seven runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and three walks. James Divosevic surrendered four runs in 0.1 innings and Constantino (1-3) sustained the hard-luck loss in the seventh.

Sell went 3-for-3 with three runs, one home run and five RBI to pace SHU. Jesse Cooper (1-0) got the win out of the Griffins bullpen despite giving up two runs on four hits in the seventh.

Slippery Rock and Seton Hill conclude the four-game series with a pair of games at Jack Critchfield Park on Sunday. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m. Sunday will also be The Rock's annual Military Appreciation Day.
