EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team saw its playoff hopes come to an end with a pair of losses to Edinboro Monday afternoon from Gierlak Gardens.

The losses drop Slippery Rock to 15-23 overall and 12-17 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. The Rock entered the game a pair of wins behind Edinboro for the fourth and final spot in the PSAC Softball Tournament, but could not pull off the upset as the Fighting Scots improved to 23-12-1 overall and 15-10-1 in PSAC play.

The result also cancels Slippery Rock's doubleheader against California (Pa.), which had been rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Edinboro scored seven runs in the sixth inning of the opener to bust open what was once a close game and pick up the 11-3 victory. The Fighting Scots snagged an early lead in game two and hung on for a 8-1 win to earn the doubleheader sweep.

In the opener, Slippery Rock and Edinboro traded a pair of runs in the first inning to open the scoring. The Fighting Scots surged ahead 4-1 with a three-run home run by Jessica Hyland in the fourth, before SRU stormed back in the top of the fifth.

With two outs in the fifth, Stacey Herzog and Alaynna Beers recorded back-to-back hits to spark the rally. After the runners advanced into scoring position, Ashley Samluk singled to centerfield to pick up a pair of RBI and pull The Rock within one at 4-3.

After a pair of scoreless frames, the Edinboro offense came to life in the bottom of the sixth. 10 straight Fighting Scots reached base as the hosts plated seven runs to end the game and record the 11-3 win.

Carly DeRose suffered the loss to fall to 8-12 on the season, allowing 11 runs on 18 hits in 5.1 innings pitched.

Samluk went 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead the offense, followed by Beers with a hit in three at-bats with a run and RBI. Freshman Allie Fischer went 2-for-3 with a double to cap the top performers for SRU.

In the nightcap, the first five batters for Edinboro reached base as the Fighting Scots pushed three runs across to take a 3-0 lead after one.

The hosts tacked on two more in the third to push the lead to 5-0 as the Slippery Rock bats were frustrated by Edinboro's Kalet Lenart.

Herzog doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on a RBI single from Fischer, but the rally was quieted before SRU could get within striking distance.

Edinboro plated three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and set down SRU in order in the seventh to pick up the 8-1 victory.

Sarah Petrash received the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. Petrash allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks in six innings pitched, while striking out eight.

Herzog led the offense in game two with a double and run scored in two at-bats with a walk, while Fischer went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Slippery Rock finishes the season sixth in the PSAC-West 15-23 overall record and 12-16 in league play.  The Rock loses seniors Beers, Taylor Welch and Haley Sherer, but returns seven-of-nine regular starters, nine-of-12 playing time regulars and its top four arms from the pitching staff.
