Rock hits the road to take on Clarion Saturday

The SRU softball team hits the road for a pivotal doubleheader against Clarion Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team hits the road for a pivotal doubleheader against Clarion Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
The Rock, currently in sixth-place of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division standings, needs to finish the season strong to have a crack at the conference's postseason tournament.
 
The PSAC Tournament begins Wednesday, with the top four teams in the division earning a berth. The Rock is 11-13 in conference play and trails Edinboro (9-8-1) and IUP (10-10) for the final playoff spot.
 
Slippery Rock begins the final stretch of the regular-season at Clarion Saturday, before traveling to Edinboro Monday and potentially returning home for California (Pa.) Tuesday.
 
Edinboro, currently in fourth-place, has doubleheaders remaining at Clarion, at home against IUP, Cal U and Slippery Rock, before finishing on the road at IUP.
 
IUP, currently in fifth-place, finishes the season with doubleheaders at Edinboro and at home against Pitt-Johnstown, Mercyhurst, Gannon and Edinboro.
 
SCOUTING THE ROCK
Record: 14-20 overall, 11-13 PSAC-West
Last Time Out: The Rock fell at Gannon, 9-2 and 12-4, in its most recent action Tuesday.
Overview: Slippery Rock ranks in the top half of the PSAC in most offensive categories and is near the middle of the pack in most pitching categories. The Rock is sixth with a .298 team batting average and fifth with 170 runs scored, while the pitching staff is 12th with a 3.76 ERA and 10th in opponent batting average at .275. SRU has been aggressive on the bases and ranks first in the PSAC with 58 stolen bases.
Top Bats: Junior Katie Kaiser leads the team with a .366 batting average, 45 hits, 23 runs and 21 RBI. Kaiser has recorded a hit in 14-straight games. Junior Stacey Herzog is fourth in the PSAC with a .731 slugging percentage and leads the team with six home runs and 25 RBI. Senior Alaynna Beers is hitting .307 with 31 hits and 18 RBI, followed by Taylor Welch with a .330 batting average and team-high 10 doubles.
Top Arms: Sophomore Carly DeRose leads the rotation at 8-10 with a 3.69 ERA and 74 strikeouts, with 10 complete games in 100.2 total innings. Freshman Brooke Dawson is 5-6 on the season with a 3.22 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 76 innings pitched.
Head Coach: Slippery Rock head coach Stacey Rice enters her first season in 2015 after serving three years as an assistant coach and two years as a graduate assistant with The Rock. Before beginning her coaching career at SRU, Rice was one of the most decorated players and prolific hitters in program history. Rice holds the all-time records for runs scored, hits, doubles, total bases, walks and at-bats while ranking second all-time in home runs and RBIs.
Next Up: The Rock resumes action Monday at Edinboro. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Record: 5-27 overall, 4-22 PSAC-West (entering Friday)
Last Time Out: Clarion fell 8-1 and 10-2 against Seton Hill, in their most recent action Sunday.
All-Time vs. SRU: Slippery Rock owns a 55-37 advantage in the all-time series dating back to 1979. The Rock has won 18 of the last 20 meetings, including wins of 2-0 and 5-2 earlier this spring.
Overview: The Golden Eagles haven't quite put it all together this season and rank near the bottom of the PSAC in most statistical categories. Clarion ranks 13th with a .259 team batting average, 16th with 98 runs scored, 16th with a 5.92 team ERA and 15th with a .333 opponent batting average, with a league-high 61 defensive errors.
Top Bats: Casey Wilcox leads the team with a .336 batting average, 36 hits, seven doubles and 16 RBI, followed by Megan Anderson with a .313 batting average, 31 hits and team-high 17 runs scored. Christina Tressler has tallied 27 hits and is hitting .278, with a team-high three home runs and 14 RBI.
Top Arms: Shawnna Crago has a team-best 5.37 ERA, but is winless at 0-11. Crago has tallied 41 strikeouts across 65.1 innings pitched. Paige Baker leads the team with a 3-7 record and holds a 7.08 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 67.1 innings.
Head Coach: Cheryl Peterson is in her first year as head coach of the Clarion softball program. Prior to Clarion, Peterson coached three seasons at Yale University and Penn State-Behrend. Peterson played collegiately and was a three-time All-AMCC selection for PSU-Behrend.
