Defense falters as Seton Hill sweeps The Rock

The SRU softball team struggled defensively in a doubleheader sweep at Seton Hill Saturday.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team struggled defensively in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader sweep at Seton Hill Saturday afternoon.

The games, originally scheduled to be played at Slippery Rock, were moved to the Griffins' home park after a week's worth of rain created unplayable field conditions at the SRU Softball Complex.

In the opener, the Griffins were aided by five Slippery Rock errors and defeated SRU 10-1 in a shortened five inning game. It was more of the same in the nightcap, as Seton Hill scored three unearned runs in a decisive five-run fourth inning and eventually won the game 8-5. Six of Seton Hill's 18 runs scored were earned.

Junior shortstop Katie Kaiser anchored the SRU offense for the day, going 4-for-7 with three runs, two RBI and a home run.

Four Slippery Rock players recorded multiple hits in the second game, highlighted by senior Alaynna Beers, who went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and a RBI. Sophomore Caitlin Baxter went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI and freshman Lauren Hawley also went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Junior third baseman Ashley Samluk picked up a pair of hits in four at bats to round out the top performers for SRU.

Sophomore Carly DeRose (6-6) was saddled with the loss in the opener after allowing 10 runs (one earned) on nine hits and four strikeouts in three innings of work. Sophomore Sarah Petrash appeared in relief and pitched two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Petrash (0-1) got the start in game two and was tagged for the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits and three strikeouts in four innings. Freshman Brooke Dawson struck out five while allowing a run on three hits in three innings of relief.

Seton Hill's explosive offense continued as the Griffins tallied eight extra base hits in the doubleheader.

With the losses, Slippery Rock falls to 9-13 overall and 6-6 in the PSAC-West. Seton Hill improved to 17-8-1 and 9-7-1 with the wins.

The Rock returns to PSAC-West action Sunday against Edinboro. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the SRU Softball Complex.
