Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University baseball team slugged five home runs in two games Monday afternoon to earn a doubleheader split against California University (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play at Jack Critchfield Park.

The five home runs were the most compiled in a doubleheader this season by Slippery Rock.

Slippery Rock (11-12, 4-8 PSAC-West) erased a five-run deficit in the opener to come away with a 9-8 victory before dropping a 14-6 decision to the Vulcans (11-12, 8-4 PSAC-West) in game two.

Leading The Rock's surging offense was senior Adam Urbania, who went a combined 4-for-6 on the day with three runs scored, one RBI, one home run and three doubles. Urbania, who is in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak, leads the PSAC with 13 doubles.

Freshman Tyler Walters made the most out of his two hits Monday by launching a pair of home runs. The homers were the first two of his collegiate career.

Senior Jake Nogalo drove in a total of five runs in the doubleheader as well as hitting his second home run of the season. Junior Alex Bell rounded out The Rock's top offensive performers by going 3-for-6 with one run and three RBI.

Game One: Slippery Rock 9 – California 8
Slippery Rock struck first in the opener when Walters and Urbania reached base on a walk and a double, respectively, before being brought in off of a single by Bell that gave SRU a 2-0 lead through two innings of play.

California proceeded to score seven unanswered runs to grab 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. Slippery Rock proceeded to start chipping away at the Vulcans' lead with four runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to back-to-back home runs from Walters and Urbania as well as a pair of RBI-singles later in the inning by sophomore Preston Falascino and junior Kyle Vozar.

Urbania and Bell continued The Rock's comeback bid the following inning when Urbania doubled and later scored on another Bell hit to tie the contest at 7-7.

David Marcus helped the Vulcans retake the lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning, but Slippery Rock was once again able to answer back when Nogalo stroked a two-run single with two outs in the fifth inning that put Slippery Rock ahead for good at 9-8.

With Slippery Rock leading, sophomore relief pitcher James Divosevic shutdown the Vulcans' offense to ensure the victory. Divosevic (1-1) was never seriously threatened and gave SRU 2.1 innings of scoreless pitching out of the bullpen that included two strikeouts.

Urbania and Bell paced The Rock in the win. The duo combined to go 6-for-7 with four runs scored and four RBI. Junior pitcher Jon Anderson got the start for Slippery Rock, lasting 4.2 innings and striking out two batters while allowing eight runs on 10 hits before giving way to Divosevic.

Game Two: California 14 – Slippery Rock 6
The almost exact opposite situation played out against Slippery Rock in game two as it was SRU who would take an early lead only to have California pull off the comeback-victory.

CU managed to get to freshman pitcher Alex Pantuso (1-2) for three runs in the first inning before SRU exploded for a six-run second inning that featured a two-run home run by Vozar, a three-run homer by Nogalo and Walters' second long ball of the afternoon.

The Rock's 6-3 advantage lasted until the fourth inning when California tallied six runs to take a 9-6 lead. The Vulcans added and additional run in the fifth and four more insurances scores in seventh while The Rock's bats were quieted by relief pitcher Mick Fennell, who did not allow a Rock batter to reach base in 3.1 innings en route to the 14-6 win.

Fennell was credited with the save while Alex Ziegler (2-0) got the win after scattering one hit and one walk in 1.2 innings of relief work for starter Andre Jones. Pantuso took the loss for SRU. He gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in 3.1 innings pitched.

Nogalo was 2-for-4 with one run, one home run and three RBI for SRU in game two.

Slippery Rock will take a break from its conference schedule to play a doubleheader Tuesday at Walsh University. First pitch from North Canton, Ohio is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
