Game Two Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University baseball team slugged its way to a doubleheader sweep of Walsh University on Tuesday in non-conference play at the WU Baseball Complex in North Canton, Ohio.
Slippery Rock hit five home runs, its most in a game since 2009, on the way to a 9-4 win in game one before compiling its 13th multi-hit game of the season in a 7-6 game-two victory. SRU has hit 12 home runs in its last five games after having only hit seven homers in the first 20 games of the season.
The non-conference sweep improves The Rock's record to 13-12 overall in 2015. Walsh drops to 12-10 on the year after the losses.
Jake Nogalo and
Preston Falascino each had a pair of multi-hit games on the afternoon. Nogalo went a combined 4-for-8 with three RBI and two runs scored while Falascino was 5-for-8 with three runs and one triple.
Adam Urbania compiled hits in both games to extend his season-long hitting streak to 12 games. Urbania, who logged a double and a home run Tuesday, now has a Rock-best 18 extra-base hits on the year.
Logan Brown hit his second and third home runs of the season in game one to round out SRU's top offensive performers.
Game One: Slippery Rock 9 – Walsh 4A day after hitting five home runs in a doubleheader split against California, The Rock's offense continued to display its power potential with back-to-back home runs by Urbania and
Tyler Walters in the first inning against Walsh.
Following an RBI-single by Nogalo in the second inning, SRU's power was once again put on display in the third inning when
Alex Bell launched his third home run of the season with Urbania on second base to extend The Rock's lead to 5-0.
Kyle Vozar concluded the third frame with another run-scoring single to plate Falascino, who tripled earlier in the inning, for SRU's sixth run of the opener.
The Cavaliers finally got to Rock starter
Anton Constantino (1-2) for two runs in the fourth only to have The Rock answer back with yet another home run in the fifth, this one coming off of Brown's bat.
Walsh tried to further cut into Slippery Rock's lead by scoring runs in the fifth and sixth inning, but ultimately couldn't get any closer as Brown connected on his second home run of the day and Constantino retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh en route to the win.
Eight of Slippery Rock's nine starters recorded hits in game one including three-hit contests from Brown, Urbania and Falascino. Nogalo registered The Rock's other multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Constantino picked up the complete-game win for SRU on the mound after scattering 10 hits and four runs over seven innings for his first victory of the season.
Game Two: Slippery Rock 7 - Walsh 6Slippery Rock and Walsh traded runs for much of game two, but a two-run double by
Carson Kessler in the fifth inning proved to be the difference in The Rock's 7-6 victory.
Trailing 3-2 entering the fourth inning, Slippery Rock tallied three runs on a two-run RBI double by Nogalo and an accompanying RBI-single by
Matt Mandes. The Rock's two-run lead was short-lived as Walsh answered back with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 5-5 game going into the fifth.
However, following consecutive singles by Walters and Brown, Kessler put Slippery Rock up for good with a bases-clearing double to left field to give SRU a 7-5 lead that it would never relinquish.
Walsh scored one run in the fifth inning to cut its deficit to one run, but relief pitcher
James Divosevic came on in the sixth and threw two scoreless innings to secure the SRU win. The Cavaliers put the tying run on first base with one out in the seventh via a leadoff single, but pinch runner Ross Etgen was caught attempting to steal second base by Walters to end the threat.
Geoff Sanner (2-0) picked up his second win of the season after pitching two innings in relief of starter
Stephen Mckee. Sanner allowed three runs on four hits before giving way to Divosevic, whose two innings of near perfect pitching netted him his third save of the season. Divosevic has not allowed a run in his last 4.1 innings of work.
Four players had multi-hit efforts in the nightcap. Kessler led the way with a 3-for-3 outing that included two RBI. Nogalo, Mandes and Falascino all went 2-for-4 as well. Nogalo also stole his team-best fifth base of the season.
Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play when it hosts Gannon University for a doubleheader to start a four-game series between The Rock and Golden Knights on Friday at Jack Critchfield Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
