CLERMONT, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped its National Training Center Tournament finale Friday night to Millersville University, 2-1.
Â
The finale was troubling for both defensive units, as Millersville and Slippery Rock combined for nine errors, making all three runs in the game unearned. Despite The Rock holding a 6-3 advantage in hits, SRU fell on the wrong side of the final score and dropped the 2-1 decision to the Marauders.
Â
Junior
Ashley Samluk anchored The Rock's offense by going 2-for-3 with a double, while sophomore
Eliza Sykes went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Taylor Welch,
Lauren Hawley and
Stacey Herzog each added a hit apiece.
Â
Sophomore
Carly DeRose received the loss despite a strong performance. DeRose allowed two runs (zero earned) on three hits and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.
Â
The Rock had plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not come up with the big hit it needed and stranded 10 base runners in the matchup.
Â
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 3-7 on the trip, while Millersville improves to 8-7.
Â
The Rock was scheduled to begin Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Tuesday, Mar. 17 at Edinboro, but the game has been postponed due to soggy field conditions. Updates on the rescheduled date will be added once they become available. Instead, The Rock is scheduled to return to action in PSAC play Friday, Mar. 20 at California (Pa.).
