#13 Rock cruises by Edinboro, 52-10

No. 13 Slippery Rock ran for 369 yards and held Edinboro to just one first down in the second half en route to a 52-10 win Saturday on the road.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The 13th ranked Slippery Rock University football team scored 35 first half points and rolled to a 52-10 win on the road at Edinboro University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Sox Harrison Stadium.

The Rock improve to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in PSAC action and keep their position atop the PSAC Western Division standings with one week of divisional play left. Indiana (Pa.) defeated Clarion Saturday to knock the Golden Eagles into third place in the standings. The Crimson Hawks are still tied with SRU atop the standings, but the tiebreaker belongs to The Rock.

Slippery Rock can lock up its third straight PSAC West title and fourth in the last five years with a win next Saturday at home against Clarion. Kickoff from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

The Rock offense proved to be too much for winless Edinboro (0-9, 0-6 PSAC) Saturday. Slippery Rock opened the game with a touchdown on its first possession for the fourth straight week and finished the first half with 35 points after running 51 plays for 326 yards.

After slowing things down a bit in the second half, Slippery Rock finished the game with 90 plays for 600 yards on offense, including 369 rushing yards and 231 passing yards.

Edinboro was held to just one first down in the second half and finished with 215 yards of total offense. The Fighting Scots managed 44 rushing yards, 30 of which came on the only first down of the second half, and threw for 171 yards.

Slippery Rock used a committee approach on offense with six players recording at least one carry and six players catching at least two passes. The ground game was led by Shamar Greene with 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Greene's day was done early in the second half and paved the way for Julian Durden to rush for a game-high 113 yards and one touchdown on just 11 carries, an average of 10.3 yards per carry.

Isiah Neely added 40 yards on seven carries, Dante Nania chipped in 48 yards on eight carries and Dominic Dingle closed the game with 63 yards on 11 carries in the fourth quarter. Jaimire Dutrieuille even had one carry, a two-yard touchdown score on a sweep. All together The Rock's running backs combined for 369 yards on 57 carries, an average of 6.5 yards per carry.

Slippery Rock's four rushing touchdowns in the game bring the season total to 35, just one shy of the program record of 36 rushing scores that was set by the 1999 team in 12 games.

Nania completed 16 passes for 177 yards with three touchdowns before giving way to Zack Newsock in the second half. Newsock looked sharp in relief, completing 3-of-4 passes for 54 yards, including a perfectly thrown 31-yarder to Cornelius Raye.

Dutrieuille finished with four catches for a team-high 64 yards and one receiving TD to go along with his rushing score. He nearly completed the trifecta when he returned a punt 55 yards for a TD, but the play was called back for holding. It was one of four touchdown plays SRU had called back on the day. Raye finished with four catches for 57 yards and one score.

Marcus Johnson made his first career start at SRU and caught three passes for 38 yards and his first touchdown. Marcus Carter added three catches for 27 yards, Leroy McClain caught three passes for 25 yards and Carnel Harley snagged two passes for 20 yards.

Andrew Huska connected on a career-long 34-yard field goal and was perfect on PAT tries for the fourth straight week. He also averaged 49.0 yards per punt on three punts and averaged 65.1 yards per kickoff on nine kickoffs.

The Rock defense held Edinboro in check all day and forced two turnovers in the game, one fumble caused by TJ Matrascia and recovered by Marcus Martin and one interception by Deonte Flemings, who moved from cornerback to safety for the injured Derrick Fulmore.

Alfon Cook led the team with nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Bob Vernick added seven tackles, Flemings had six and Teven Williams finished with five, includuing a solo sack. Mike Grata added two pass breakups and Martin recorded one solo sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

Edinboro's lone bright spot on the day came from receiver Darren Massey, who broke the school record for catches in a single-game with 15, but those grabs added up to just 73 yards. The lone touchdown of the day, which came after a pass interference call on third down gave the Scots life at the end of the first half, went to Alex Caratelli.

Jake Sisson completed 23-of-44 pass attempts for 171 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Sisson was also the Scots' leading rusher with nine carries for 19 yards.

Slippery Rock will now turn its attention to next Saturday's home game against Clarion and a chance to claim a third straight PSAC Western Division title and berth in the annual PSAC title game.
