McKay breaks career points record, leads Rock to OT win

Slippery Rock junior forward Megan McKay scored three goals and set three program records in the 3-2 overtime win against Limestone Friday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- Junior forward Megan McKay scored three goals and broke three program records in leading the Slippery Rock University field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime win against Limestone Friday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

McKay's hat trick brought her career point total to 54 and her season point total to 37, helping her break SRU's 27-year-old record for career points set by Marlene Hall (51) in 1985-88, as well as the single-season point record set by Lindsay Brown (33) in 2013. McKay also scored her 16th goal in the win, which breaks SRU's 39-year-old record for single-season goals set by Audrey Davison (15) in 1976.

Slippery Rock improves to 6-11 overall with the win, while Limestone falls to 9-5.

Early in the first half, McKay dribbled through a herd of Limestone defenders and scored on a hard shot to put SRU up 1-0 five minutes into the game.

Limestone's Allyson Meyer found Brittany Carner in front of the cage in the 24th minute for a quick score to tie it up 1-1.

With the score still tied 15 minutes into the second half, McKay scored her second goal of the game when her shot went off the stick of a Saints defender and into the cage. Junior midfielder Renee Rosenblum got the touch off the penalty corner before McKay's goal.

The Saints tied the score up 2-2 just eight minutes later when Carney took a pass from Jill Funkhouser after a penalty corner. Slippery Rock got off three more shots, while Limestone recorded one, but neither team would score for the remainder of regulation.

McKay scored the golden goal 8:50 into overtime when Kailee Krupski played the ball ahead to McKay for the hat trick.

Senior goalie Carlee DuMars recorded two saves in goal to earn the win for The Rock. Tabria Cochran was tagged with the loss for her team after registering one save for the Saints.

Limestone outshot The Rock, 12-9, while the hosts held an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners.
