Rock drops overtime thriller vs. Bloomsburg

Slippery Rock lost in overtime to Bloomsburg, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at James Egli Field in PSAC action.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team lost in overtime to Bloomsburg University, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at James Egli Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in league play. Bloomsburg improves to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in PSAC competition. The majority of the game was played in a driving rain that left the turf at Egli Field wet and muddy.

Following a scoreless first half in which Rock junior goalkeeper Steven Rerick stopped five Bloomsburg shots to keep the game at 0-0 heading into halftime, Bloomsburg struck first out of the break thanks to a Josh Smith goal four minutes into the period.

After the goal, the Huskies and Slippery Rock traded shots until SRU was able to even the score at 1-1 via a goal by senior defender Ryan Lutke in the 64th minute off of a free kick. The goal was Lutke's team-leading sixth of the season and his first non-penalty kick goal of the year.

Slippery Rock continued to pressure Bloomsburg and quickly took the lead when freshman midfielder Justin Minda took a cross from junior midfielder Mike Pcholinsky to beat Huskie goalie Jared Ott for the score just 41 seconds after The Rock's first goal. Minda's goal was his second in as many games.

However, Slippery Rock was unable to maintain its one-goal lead as Anthony Cerda tied the game on a header in the 79th minute. Both teams recorded one shot each following the Bloomsburg goal, but neither was on target and the game headed into overtime.

The Huskies earned the victory when Nick Izzo made a miracle shot from 35 yards out into the upper left part of The Rock's goal 7:59 into overtime to give Bloomsburg the 3-2 victory.

Rerick finished the game with six saves. In addition to goals by Lutke and Minda, Slippery Rock's offensive effort was paced by junior forward Matt Sangermano, who took a team-high two shots on goal.

For the game, Bloomsburg held a 15-13 advantage over The Rock in shots while SRU had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Slippery Rock will look to bounce back from the defeat 6 p.m. Wednesday at Gannon University.
