Rock beats LHU, clinches tournament berth

Slippery Rock shutout Lock Haven, 5-0, Saturday afternoon to clinch a spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team shutout Lock Haven University, 5-0, Saturday afternoon to clinch a spot in the upcoming Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament.

In addition to earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament, Saturday's win improved The Rock's record to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in conference matches. Slippery Rock's tournament berth is the program's fourth consecutive trip to the PSAC Tournament. SRU's last conference championship came in 2013. LHU dropped to 7-9-1 overall and 6-4 in the conference.

Slippery Rock's five goals were a season-high and the most since it scored seven goals against Pitt-Johnstown Oct. 4, 2014.

The Rock received goals from five different players in freshman midfielder Kenton Keeslar, senior forward Peter Boylan, junior forward Matt Sangermano, junior midfielder Josh Allman and junior midfielder Mike Pcholinsky.

Junior defender Kyle Boyer, freshman defender Aaron Lambert, senior defender Ryan Lutke and senior forward Gabriel Hrecznyj all had assists in the win.

Junior goalkeeper Steven Rerick made six saves to earn the shutout. Rerick is now 5-2 on the season with two shutouts.

Keeslar got The Rock on the scoreboard early with a goal, his first in a Rock uniform, in the ninth minute. Boylan sent SRU into halftime with a 2-0 lead by finishing off a long pass from Lambert at 22:17. The score was Boylan's third of the season; he has now tallied at least one point in six of The Rock's last seven games.

After a scoreless start to the second half, Slippery Rock put the game out of reach at 68:14 when Sangermano converted his fifth goal of the season off of a Lutke assist. Allman and Pcholinsky added insurance goals with under 10 minutes to play en route to the 5-0 victory.

Slippery Rock will look to close out the regular season on a high note with a win 12 p.m. Oct. 31 against Pitt-Johnstown at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
