Rock downs UPJ, 7-0, to earn home playoff game

Slippery Rock cruised to a 7-0 victory against Pitt-Johnstown Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in its regular season finale to secure a first round home game in the PSAC Tournament.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team cruised to a 7-0 victory against the University of Pitt-Johnstown Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in its regular-season finale to clinch a first round home game in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament.

The victory improves The Rock's record to 11-6 overall and 7-4 in league games. Slippery Rock will enter the PSAC Tournament as the fourth seed and host California (Pa.) 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. SRU defeated the Vulcans earlier in the regular season, 3-1. The Rock's conference tournament bid marks Slippery Rock's fourth consecutive postseason appearance.

Saturday's game was never in doubt as SRU peppered the Pitt-Johnstown goal with shots early and often as it matched the program's highest scoring output since defeating Pitt-Bradford 10-1 in 1995.

Matt Sangermano led the way with a career-high three goals as well as one assist in his final regular season game at The Rock. Two of the goals came in the first half. His big day vaulted him to first on the team in both points (18) and goals (eight) on the season.

Also adding goals for Slippery Rock were fellow seniors forward Peter Boylan, defender Bevan Bish and forward Mike Ilodigwe. Junior midfielder Josh Allman rounded out The Rock's scorers with his second goal of the season. Ilodigwe also had one assist.

Senior defender Ryan Lutke, senior midfielder Stephen McConahy, freshman midfielder Justin Minda and freshman midfielder Adolfo Segura all assisted on goals as well.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Hoffer stopped all three of Pitt-Johnstown's (1-17, 0-11 PSAC) shots to record his fourth shutout of the year. Hoffer is now 6-3 on the season with a 0.94 goals against average.

Already leading by two goals heading into the second half, SRU's offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the final 45 minutes, starting with Boylan's fourth goal of the season, and second in as many games, at 55:38 followed by near back-to-back goals from Sangermano and Allman.

The Rock closed out the game with two more goals in the final 10 minutes off the feet of Bish and Ilodigwe. Bish's goal was the first of his collegiate career.

For the game, Slippery Rock held a 34-8 and 10-5 advantage in shots and corners, respectively.

Prior to Saturday's game The Rock's 2015 senior class of Bish, Hoffer, Ilodigwe, Lutke, McConahy, Sangermano, Peter Boylan, defender Ryan Boylan, forward Gabriel Hrecznyj and defender Nick Kutcher were recognized for their contributions to the program over their careers.
