Rock downs West Chester, 2-1, in overtime

Matt Sangermano scored a pair of goals to lead Slippery Rock to a 2-1 victory against West Chester in PSAC play Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior forward Matt Sangermano scored a pair of goals to lead the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime-victory against West Chester University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The win improves The Rock's record to 9-5 overall and to 5-3 in PSAC play. West Chester dropped to 5-6-3 overall and 3-4-1 in league games. Slippery Rock is now 3-1 in overtime contests this season.

Sangermano's two-goal day increased his season total to four, a new career-best, and was the first multi-goal game of his Rock career. The scores snapped an eight-game goalless streak for one of The Rock's top forwards. He also finished the game with a match-best three shots on goal.

Senior forward Peter Boylan setup both of Sangermano's goals with terrific passes for his fifth and sixth assists of the season. Boylan has now registered points in four consecutive matches to push his season total to 10 off of two goals and a team-leading six assists.

Freshman midfielder Justin Minda, senior forward Mike Ilodigwe and senior defender Ryan Lutke each tallied a shot on goal as well in the win.

West Chester controlled the early portion of the game with seven shots in the opening 30 minutes. Giovanni Mowrey finally broke through a tough Rock defense when he scored off of a shot by Kody Eberly that was initially deflected by junior goalkeeper Steven Rerick to put WCU up 1-0 at 29:55. However, the rest of the match belonged to The Rock.

Sangermano sent Slippery Rock into halftime tied with the Rams at 1-1 when he scored off of a pass from Boylan that was perfectly placed between two defenders in the 39th minute.

Slippery Rock's defense continued to keep West Chester in check in the second half while the SRU offensive attack possessed the ball much better which resulted in 12 shots in the second 45 minutes as opposed to its three attempts in the first half. The Rock's best chance for a goal in the second half came when Sangermano just missed a header into an open net in the 50th minute.

SRU secured the win just 1:40 into the first overtime period when Boylan made a run down the right side of West Chester's zone and crossed a pass into Sangermano, who proceeded to connect on a header to give Slippery Rock the 2-1 win.

Rerick finished the match with six saves to improve his record to 4-1 on the season.

Saturday's win was the 20th of head coach Andy Hoggarth's SRU career; he needed just 32 games to reach the milestone, becoming the third fastest coach in Rock history to 20 wins.

For the game, West Chester held a slight 19-17 advantage in total shots and a 5-1 edge in corners.

Slippery Rock will look to continue its push towards a conference tournament bid 2 p.m. Wednesday at Seton Hill.
