Rock and ESU play to 2-2 tie

The Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team earned a 2-2 tie on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play against East Stroudsburg University Saturday afternoon.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned a 2-2 tie on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play against East Stroudsburg University Saturday afternoon.
 
The tie moves The Rock's record to 7-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in league games. East Stroudsburg exits the weekend at 6-4-1 both overall and in PSAC play. Through Saturday's games, Slippery Rock, East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg are in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings with 19 points each.
 
Slippery Rock was led on the day with goals by senior midfielder Crysta Ganter and sophomore midfielder Tess Keeley, who also took a team-high three shots on goal. Keeley's goal was her third of the season while Ganter's goal was her second of 2015. Junior defender Sam Thornton also chipped in an assist and two shots on goal to aid The Rock's offense.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Elrod stopped four shots in 110 minutes of action.
 
For the game, SRU edged ESU in corner kicks (5-4) while the Warriors held a slight 14-11 advantage in total shots.
 
Ganter scored the game's first goal just 6:13 into the contest. Slippery Rock maintained its one-goal lead for the majority of the first half until Shea Neal tied the contest for East Stroudsburg with a goal in the 41st minute.
 
Slippery Rock regained the lead early in the second half off of Keeley's goal that was setup by Thornton in the 57th minute. However, East Stroudsburg was once again able to find the equalizer when Brielyn Hacket beat Elrod just over a minute later at 58:46. Neither team was able to record a shot on goal against the others stout defense for the final 31 minutes of regulation and the game headed to overtime.
 
Keeley and Thornton both tallied shots on goal in the overtime periods, but both shots were stopped by ESU goalie Jules Harris. However, Elrod made three saves of her own in the extra 20 minutes of play to help Slippery Rock maintain the tie.
 
Saturday's game was Slippery Rock's second double overtime match in the last three games.
 
Slippery Rock returns to James Egli Field for its final two home games of the season starting 4 p.m. Tuesday against Clarion.
