Mansfield snaps Rock's six-game winning streak

A cold shooting effort from The Rock and a hot 3-point shooting effort from the Mountaineers led to an 82-72 win for Mansfield and snapped Slippery Rock's six-game winning streak.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped with an 82-72 loss on the road at Mansfield University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action at Decker Gymnasium.
 
Slippery Rock and Mansfield each made the same number of field goals in the game, but The Rock took 21 more shot attempts and finished the game shooting just 37.3 percent, while the Mountaineers shot better than 50 percent. 
 
A dominant advantage in the paint saw Slippery Rock record 24 offensive rebounds and a 44-33 edge in total rebounds, but the visitors could only turn those 24 offensive boards into 21 points. The Rock was credited with 19 missed layups in the game.
 
The deciding factor for Mansfield was the long ball, as the Mounties knocked down 11 3-pointers and shot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc.
 
The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for Slippery Rock and drops The Rock to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in PSAC action. Mansfield improves to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in PSAC games with its first crossover win of the year.
 
Slippery Rock shot 30 percent in the first half and trailed 36-24 at the break, a deficit the team could never recover from. The offense was much better in the second half, doubling the scoring output from the first half, but Mansfield improved in the second half as well to maintain its advantage.
 
The Rock finished the game shooting 37.3 percent from the field, connecting on 28-of-75 attempts. Included in that number was a 3-of-17 effort from beyond the 3-point arc (17.6 percent). One positive offensively was one of the best free throw shooting efforts of the season as The Rock hit 13-of-16 from the charity stripe for an 81.6 percent efficiency.
 
Mansfield finished the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field (28-of-54), 57.9 percent from 3-point (11-of-19) and 78.9 percent from the free throw line (15-of-19).  Slippery Rock dropped to 0-3 on the season when its opponent shoots better than 45 percent from the field.
 
The Rock placed four players in double figures, led by a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds from Antonio Butler. Cornelius Brown added 13 points and eight rebounds. Malcolm Richardson scored 12 points off the bench and Kelvin Goodwin added 11 points. Frank Holloway pulled down eight rebounds to cap the top performances from Slippery Rock.
 
Mansfield also placed four players in double figures, led by a game-high 28 points and nine rebounds from Charles Pemberton. Joe Bell added 20 points, Thomas Moore scored 19 points and Andreas Katopodis chipped in 10 points.
 
Slippery Rock will have little time to regroup as it continues PSAC crossover play tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. tip at Lock Haven. The Rock returns to Morrow Field House Wednesday to host Bloomsburg at 7:30 p.m.
