SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team took an early lead just over five minutes into the game and never looked back in its 2-0 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Kutztown University Wednesday afternoon at James Egli Field.
Â
The victory improves The Rock's record to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the PSAC. Kutztown falls to 3-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in league play. The triumph also maintained Slippery Rock's unbeaten record of 3-0-1 at home in 2014.
Â
Leslie Henny got The Rock on the board with a goal in the sixth minute while
Brooke Edwards added an insurance score with 28:57 remaining in the second half en route to the win.
Â
Slippery Rock ended the match with a 7-6 lead in shots on goal while Kutztown held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks while both teams maintained equal possession in what was a fairly even match throughout the day.
Â
Henny's goal came when
Caitlin Binder played a corner kick into
Crysta Ganter, who headed the ball down to Henny's foot which led to the senior midfielder beating Kutztown goalie Deanna Messner for the opening goal. The score was Henny's second of the season, tying her for the season team lead with
Andrea Felix and
Ali Brosky.
Â
The SRU defense proceeded to work towards its fourth shutout of the year throughout the remainder of the first half by successfully clearing three corners and six shots from the Golden Bears.
Â
Slippery Rock and Kutztown traded possession for much of the opening minutes coming out of the break in the second half until Brosky took the ball down the left side of the Kutztown zone and drove a pass into Edwards, who was able to corral the attempt and send in the first goal of her collegiate career.
Â
The two-goal lead was more than enough for the Slippery Rock defense, which allowed just two shots on goal after Edwards' score to secure a 2-0 conference win.
Â
Brosky's assist tied her with Felix for a team-best five points on the season. She has now scored two goals and passed out one assist in SRU's last four contests.
