SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The new era of Slippery Rock University women's basketball took a huge step forward Wednesday night when The Rock defeated preseason Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division favorite Edinboro 66-57 at Morrow Field House.
Â
In addition to being Slippery Rock's fourth consecutive victory, the win also snapped a nine-game SRU losing streak to Edinboro, a team that has been nationally ranked for many of those contests. Slippery Rock's record now stands at 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC-West. Edinboro, which was ranked No. 11 in last week's WBCA poll, falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Â
Slippery Rock's four-game winnings streak is its longest since the 2007-08 season.
Â
Slippery Rock trailed by six points at 19-13 15 minutes into the game, but closed the opening period on a furious 17-2 run to head into the break leading 30-21. SRU dominated the final five minutes of the half as senior forward
D'Asia Chambers tallied eight points during the run while The Rock's defense forced five turnovers.
Â
Edinboro delivered its best shot to Slippery Rock in the second half, closing SRU's advantage to as little as one point on two separate occasions only to see Slippery Rock regroup each time to extend its edge.
Â
The Rock built a 10-point lead at 62-52 with 1:18 remaining in regulation and sealed the win by making four of its final six free throws in the final minute of play en route to the nine-point victory.
Â
The win was a carbon copy of what has made Slippery Rock so successful through the first seven games of the 2014-15 season. SRU's defense held Edinboro to a 31.8 field goal percentage from the field overall and a 17.4 percent shooting performance from three-point range while forcing 15 Fighting Scot turnovers and winning the battle of the rebounds 43-33.
Â
As has been the case for much of the year, Chambers was once again the best play on the court Wednesday. She finished the game with game-highs of 27 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Chambers shot 8-for-14 from the field overall, 1-1 from beyond the arc and 10-for-13 from the free throw line. The double-double was Chambers' fifth of the season.
Â
The junior guard duo of
Erica Aiello and
Taylor Siggers both finished in double figures as well with 12 points apiece. Aiello also passed out five assists while Siggers made three steals and pulled down seven rebounds.
Â

Danielle Garroutte and freshman guard Shannon with six points each and freshman forward
Mallory Heinle with three points. Heinle also had five rebounds, which along with Aiello and junior forward
Megan Hardiman tied for the third most on the team.
Â
Laurel Lindsey had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists in the loss for the Fighting Scots.
Â
Another major factor in The Rock's victory was SRU's ability to get to the foul line and convert its free throws as Slippery Rock made a season-high 24 foul shots on 34 attempts.
Â
Slippery Rock will now break for finals next week before returning to Morrow Field House to host Millersville and Shippensburg in PSAC crossover action Dec. 16-17.
