SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team shot a season-high 45.8 percent from the field and forced 30 turnovers en route to a 98-71 victory against Penn State Beaver Saturday afternoon at Morrow Field House.
The triumph was The Rock's third consecutive win, increasing SRU's record to 4-2 on the season. Slippery Rock has not started 4-2 since 2007-08. Penn State Beaver dropped to 3-3 in the loss.
Senior forward
D'Asia Chambers tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 29 points and 15 rebounds in what was another strong outing that also included five assists and four steals. Chambers was an efficient 13-for-19 from the field. Her 29 points were three short of a career-high.
Junior forward
BreAnna Gross and freshman guard
Shannon Jack came off the bench to have the finest offensive performances of their young Slippery Rock careers with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Gross added five rebounds, three steals and two blocks as well.
Slippery Rock was tested early on when Penn State Beaver jumped out to an early 15-12 lead midway through the first half. However, Slippery Rock responded by closing the period on a 27-12 run to head into the break with a commanding 39-27 advantage. Gross scored eight points during the spurt to pace SRU.
SRU was never threatened in the final 20 minutes of regulation as Slippery Rock steadily built its lead to as many as 32 points at 92-60 on the way to its 27-point win.
The Rock went 34-for-75 from the field overall and 21-for-27 (77.8 percent) from the foul line. The 21 successful free throws were the most by Slippery Rock since it converted 21 attempts from the charity last season at Pitt-Johnstown.
For the game, SRU held advantages over Penn State Beaver in rebounds (45-39), blocks (7-2), steals (14-8), points off turnovers (33-20) and points in the paint (38-22).
Rounding out The Rock's top performers were junior guard
Erica Aiello, freshman forward
Mallory Heinle and junior forward
Megan Hardiman. Aiello had eight points and five assists, Heinle matched Aiello's scoring output while blocking three shots and Hardiman grabbed five rebounds in 11 minutes.
Morgan Kurtz made six three-pointers and finished the game with 24 points for Penn State Beaver.
