Rock earns 79-71 home win vs. Pitt-Johnstown

Kelvin Goodwin scored 21 points while Antonio Butler and Malcolm Richardson both added 17 points to lead the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team to a 79-71 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday night at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Kelvin Goodwin scored 21 points while Antonio Butler and Malcolm Richardson both added 17 points to lead the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to a 79-71 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday night at Morrow Field House.
 
The win improved The Rock's record to 3-1 overall on the season in addition to pushing their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division record to 1-1. Pitt-Johnstown drops to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play with the loss.
 
Goodwin achieved his first 20-point game at SRU by shooting 8-for-13 from the field overall with a pair of three-pointers as well as a 3-for-4 performance from the foul line. Defensively, Goodwin made three steals.
 
Richardson and Butler also had quality shooting nights, going 7-for-13 and 6-for-12 from the field, respectively. Both players played a quality all-around game as Richardson finished with five rebounds, five assists and five steals while Butler pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
 
As a team, SRU shot a season-best 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the field to go with edges over the Mountain Cats in rebounding (41-33), turnovers forced (18-13), steals (14-2), points off turnovers (22-16), points in the paint (32-26) and fast break points (18-8).
 
In a game that featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes, neither team led by more than four points for the entirety of the first period as the game went to halftime with The Rock leading 42-39 thanks to Cornelius Brown's layup with 22 seconds left before the break.
 
The Mountain Cats managed to creep out to a four-point lead at 51-47 five minutes into the second half before Slippery Rock went on a 14-0 run over the following 6:43 to pull ahead 62-51 with nine minutes remaining in regulation. SRU built its 11-point lead by forcing seven UPJ turnovers over the run on defense and in part to Richardson providing seven points on the offensive end.
 
Pitt-Johnstown responded by cutting The Rock's lead to as little as one point with 4:42 left on the clock, but SRU maintained its composure and closed out the game by scoring eight of the game's final 10 points en route to the 79-71 triumph.
 
Slippery Rock was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 1:26 of Saturday's game.
 
Brown came just short of a double-double with eight points, a team-high eight rebounds and two blocks.
 
Ian Vescovi had 20 points and seven rebounds for Pitt-Johnstown in the loss.
 
Slippery Rock will step out of PSAC play for a pair of games at the Gannon Classic in Erie, Pa. SRU will Alderson-Broaddus on Nov. 28 and Le Moyne on Nov. 29. Both game's are scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
