MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team eyed an upset over No. 1 Millersville, but fell to the Marauders 2-0 on a cold Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.

The Rock's defense continued its strong play by holding the Marauders to a pair of goals. Millersville entered the game averaging 4.57 goals per game and held the title as the highest scoring team in the PSAC, while also ranking second nationally in the same category. The first-ranked Marauders also entered the game with an average scoring margin of +3.96, which ranked first nationally.

Junior goalkeeper Carlee DuMars was strong in front of the cage for SRU, allowing two goals on 10 shots faced. DuMars made four saves but was tagged with the loss to fall to 4-5 on the season.

The Marauders struck first in the 14th minute of the opening half as Kayla Bixler connected on a one-timer from Sarah Bomberger, giving the hosts a 1-0 edge. The lead would hold through halftime as The Rock was held without a shot.

Millersville came out firing in the second half as they looked to put The Rock away, but senior Kelsey Gustafson made an exceptional defensive save to keep SRU within striking distance. Sophomore Michelle Couch nearly gave Slippery Rock the equalizer in the 45th minute, but Rachel Dickinson stepped in to make a huge defensive save and keep The Rock off the board.

With the clock winding down, Champayne Hess notched an insurance goal for Millersville in the 59th minute on passes from Alicia Youtz and Katelyn Zapp to put the Marauders up 2-0.

The first-ranked Marauders finished with advantages of 10-1 in shots and 11-1 in penalty corners.

With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in PSAC action. Meanwhile, Millersville improves to 8-0 and 6-0 in league play. The Marauders remain one of the three unbeaten teams remaining in the country.
