Rock upend Mansfield 2-1 with a pair of late goals

The SRU field hockey team scored two dramatic goals in the final ten minutes of regulation to defeat Mansfield 2-1 in PSAC action Saturday afternoon from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team scored a pair of goals in the final ten minutes of regulation to defeat Mansfield 2-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in PSAC action. Meanwhile, Mansfield falls to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in league play.
 
Despite posting advantages of 23-1 in shots and 16-4 in penalty corners, The Rock found itself in trouble of an improbable defeat with less than ten minutes remaining in regulation.
 
Sophomore Michelle Couch found the back of the cage on a slick pass from classmate Megan McKay to tie the game at 1-1 in the 62nd minute.
 
The contest seemed destined for overtime as Kylie McCarty's shot clanged off the goal post in the final minute of regulation, but a foul in the box awarded Slippery Rock a penalty stroke with mere seconds remaining.
 
Senior Kelsey Gustafson capitalized on the penalty stroke by burying the shot past the outstretched pads of the keeper to notch a 2-1 win for The Rock on SRU's 125th Anniversary celebration.
 
The Mounties' lone-goal came off the stick of Jessi Swingle in the 9th minute, as the visitors exploited a penalty corner for their only shot and goal in the match.
 
Junior Carlee DuMars picked up the win for The Rock to improve to 4-6 on the season.
 
Laura Lawson was tagged with the loss despite making 15 saves on 22 shots faced and allowing just two goals.
 
Slippery Rock returns to PSAC action Tuesday on the road at Seton Hill. The match against the Griffins is set to begin at 4 p.m.
