Rock loses at No. 11 Mercyhurst

The Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team could not overcome an early scoring barrage by No. 11 Mercyhurst University in a 6-0 loss on the road Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team could not overcome an early scoring barrage by No. 11 Mercyhurst University in a 6-0 loss on the road Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.
 
The loss ends Slippery Rock's two-game winning streak and drops its overall record to 9-6-0 and its PSAC mark to 5-4-0. Mercyhurst, which entered the game ranked 11th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, improves to 14-2-0 overall and 8-1-0 in league games.
 
Mercyhurst scored four goals through the opening 27 minutes of play Saturday before adding two more goals to close out the first half. Slippery Rock attempted five shots in the second half, but couldn't avoid the shutout in the eventual 6-0 loss.
 
Peter Boylan, Dom Francis and Matt Sangermano each attempted two shots on the day. Both of Boylan's attempts were on goal while one shot apiece by Francis and Sangermano were on target.
 
Goalkeeper Steven Rerick played all 90 minutes for The Rock and finished the game with four saves.
 
Jack Watson and Richard Vanhorne paced the Mercyhurst attack with two goals and two assists each. Fernando Martinez and Danny Deakin also tallied goals.
 
For the game, the Lakers held edges over Slippery Rock in total shots (19-8), shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (4-2).
 
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back when it closes out the regular season next weekend Friday at East Stroudsburg and Saturday at West Chester. Start times are set for 3:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
