NCAA Regional Rankings
EDINBORO, Pa. – Caitlin Binder scored a goal with under two minutes remaining in regulation to break a tie game and give the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory at Edinboro University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition.
The win, Slippery Rock's seventh in its last eight games, improves SRU's record to 10-3-1 on the season overall and to 9-3-1 in the PSAC. The victory was also the 249th win in head coach
Noreen Herlihy's career. With Slippery Rock's next win Herlihy will become the 11
th head coach in NCAA Division II women's soccer history to amass 250 career wins.
Slippery Rock also found out today that it was ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region by the NCAA, as the origination released its first set of regional rankings for the 2014 season. Charleston was slotted first in the region followed in the top eight by West Chester, Kutztown, East Stroudsburg, Notre Dame, The Rock, West Virginia Wesleyan and Shepherd. The top six teams in the region at the conclusion of the season will qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Binder's scored the game-winning goal, her third such goal of the season, Wednesday by rebounding a deflected shot in front of the Edinboro goal and beating Fighting Scot keeper Meghan Kelly to the right side of the net at the 88:44 mark in the second half. Edinboro was unable to record a shot in the game's closing seconds to give Slippery Rock the hard-fought road victory.
Slippery Rock took control of the contest in the final portion of the second half. Defensively, SRU did not allow an Edinboro attempt in the final 20 minutes of play while the Slippery Rock offense put six attempts on the Fighting Scots net, including the game-winning goal, over the same stretch of time.
For the game, Binder attempted two shots in 58 minutes played off the bench. The goal was her fourth of the season and third in Slippery Rock's last four games.
Others contributing to a Rock attack that included 15 total attempts on the Edinboro net included
Dara Demich and
Ali Brosky with four shots apiece. Two of Brosky's attempts were on goal.
Goalkeeper
Annabelle Hegeman stopped five shots to record her PSAC-best seventh shutout of the season. The Slippery Rock defense has still given up just eight goals this season.
For the game, Slippery Rock edged Edinboro in total shots (15-13) and corner kicks (4-3). Both teams had five shots on goal.
Liz Debo attempted four shots, two of which were on goal, in the loss for Edinboro (8-6-1, 8-5-1 PSAC).
Slippery Rock will look to carry its momentum into the weekend when it travels to Mansfield University for a 1:30 p.m. Saturday showdown.
