Traditional Box Score MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three games with a 1-0 double overtime victory at Mansfield University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.
The victory was the 250
th in the career of Rock head coach
Noreen Herlihy. She is just the 11
th coach in NCAA Division II women's soccer history to eclipse the 250-win barrier. Since taking over The Rock's soccer program in 1995, Herlihy has guided Slippery Rock to 19 winning seasons, nine years with at least 14 victories, three PSAC championships and nine NCAA Tournament berths.
In addition to being a career milestone for Herlihy and keeping Slippery Rock's winning streak alive, the win improved SRU's record to 11-3-1 overall and to 10-3-1 in the PSAC. Slippery Rock enters the final week of the regular season having already clinched a spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. Mansfield falls to 3-12-1 overall and 2-12-1 in league matches with the loss.
The duo of
Brooke Edwards and
Dara Demich led the Slippery Rock attack on the day. Demich, who tallied a game-high five shots on goal Saturday, fed Edwards a cross pass which she proceeded to score off of in the 109
th minute of competition to give Slippery Rock the 1-0 win.
Edwards' goal was her second of the season while the assist was Demich's second of the year as well. Three of Edwards' four shots were on goal against Mansfield.
Slippery Rock controlled the game from its start and finished the day with large edges in total shots (24-6), shots on goal (13-3) and corner kicks (10-0).
Despite the overwhelming advantages, SRU was unable to finish any of its many shots on target in regulation as the game headed into overtime. After a scoreless extra 10 minutes the game went into double overtime where The Rock avoided settling for a tie thanks to Edwards' goal with 81 seconds remaining in the period.
Goalkeeper
Annabelle Hegeman stopped three shots for her eighth shutout of the year. The Rock's defense, which includes starting defenders
Lynn Neef,
Maddy Tletski and
Haley Burkholder, have recorded a total of 10 shutouts in 2014 and have given up a scant eight goals.
Sam Thornton added two shots on goal for the Slipper Rock offense while the trio of
Tess Keeley,
Andrea Felix and
Ariana Daukss all tallied one shot on goal each.
Slippery Rock is now a perfect 8-0 all-time against the Mounties and has yet to allow a Mansfield goal.
Alana Greenawalt stopped 12 shots for Mansfield in the loss.
Slippery Rock closes out the regular season next weekend when it travels east to play at East Stroudsburg Friday and at West Chester Saturday in a pair of games that will play a role in shaping not only the PSAC standings, but also the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region's rankings.
