Traditional Box Score (HTML)SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored early and often in a dominant 6-0 victory over Lock Haven University Saturday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The win, Slippery Rock's sixth in its last seven games, improved The Rock's record to 9-3-1 overall in 2014 and 8-3-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition. Lock Haven dropped to 2-11-1 overall and 2-10-1 in league play.
SRU, which entered the game ranked 24
th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, scored all six of its goals in the first half before steadily controlling possession for the final 45 minutes to secure the conference victory.
Slippery Rock was led on the day by the duo of
Nicole Krueger and
Tess Keeley. Both players scored twice against the Bald Eagles and now have six and five goals on the season, respectively. Keeley also assisted on one goal for the five-point outing.
Ali Brosky and
Dara Demich rounded out The Rock's goal scorers. Brosky is now tied with Krueger for the team lead in goals on the year.
Helping to set up the Slippery Rock attack was
Brooke Edwards and
Leslie Henny. Both players ended the contest with two assists.
For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over Lock Haven in total shots (18-8), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (3-0).
Goalkeepers
Annabelle Hegeman and
Shannon Mahoney both played 45 minutes to combine for Slippery Rock's eighth shutout of the season.
Saturday's contest was never in doubt as Keeley quickly put The Rock up 2-0 on a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes of action before Krueger added two scores in the 28
th and 37
th minutes of the opening half to give SRU a commanding 4-0 lead.
Just under a minute after Krueger's second goal, Brosky made it a 5-0 match when she scored on an assist from
Maddy Tletski.
Demich proceeded to put the finishing touches on a nearly flawless first half when she headed home a cross pass from Edwards with three seconds left in the opening half for Slippery Rock's sixth and final goal of the game.
Slippery Rock's six goals was the team's second highest total of the season; SRU also scored 10 times in a win against Pitt-Johnstown earlier in the year.
Jamie Hunter tallied four shots for Lock Haven in the losing effort.
Prior to the game, Slippery Rock honored its 2014 senior class of Brosky, Edwards, Krueger and Henny in what was the quartet's final regular season home game.
Slippery Rock will look to continue its winning ways when it travels to Edinboro University on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
