Rock blank Kutztown 2-0 on Senior Day

The SRU field hockey team blanked Kutztown 2-0 on Senior Day in PSAC action Saturday afternoon from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team blanked Kutztown 2-0 on Senior Day in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock extends its win-streak to three as The Rock improve to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC. The Rock's seven wins match the seventh-best single season mark in program history, with five games remaining on the schedule.  Slippery Rock also moves up to fifth place in the PSAC standings with the victory, while Kutztown drops to 6-6 overall and into sixth place in league play at 4-4.
 
Prior to the game, the graduating class of Kaili Simmons, Lexie Nieri, Baylee Childress, Allison Shade, Lauren Shideler, Kelsey Gustafson and Anna Swearingen was honored for its contributions to The Rock field hockey program.
 
The game remained scoreless through much of the first half before Shade capped a 30-yard run with a finesse shot in the 30th minute to give The Rock a 1-0 lead heading to the break. After halftime, sophomore Megan McKay tallied her first goal of the season off a penalty corner in the 49th minute to give SRU a 2-0 advantage.
 
The Rock's defensive unit continued its stellar play in front of junior goalkeeper Carlee DuMars, who made four saves in her second shutout of the fall. With the win, DuMars improves to 7-6 on the season.
 
Slippery Rock picked up the win despite the Golden Bears posting advantages in shots (9-7) and penalty corners (12-3).
 
The Rock returns to PSAC action Wednesday, Oct. 22 at home against Bloomsburg. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium and will serve as The Rock's "Corners for Cancer" game, with the proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
