Walck swings big bat in Rock win

Junior third baseman Jamison Walck had three hits and picked up two RBIs, including the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, to lead SRU (14-17-1) to a 5-4 come-from-behind win Sunday over Mansfield at Jack Critchfield Park

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior third baseman Jamison Walck was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, including the game-winner, Sunday to lead the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over visiting Mansfield University in a single game at Jack Critchfield Park.

Walck (pictured), who played in only his 14th game this spring and made his ninth start, lined a two-out single to left field in the bottom of the ninth inning to allow The Rock to snatch the proverbial victory from the jaws of defeat.

SRU held a 3-0 lead at the end of seven innings of action, only to see Mansfield (8-22) score two runs in both the top of the eighth and ninth innings to take a 4-3 lead.

Walck's second hit of the game, an RBI single to left in the sixth inning, broke a scoreless tie after starting pitchers Kyle Schneider (SRU) and Andy Young (Mansfield) traded goose eggs for the first five and a half innings.

Two innings earlier, Walck had lined a two-out double to left-center to account for only the second Rock hit of the game, but the hit went for naught as he was stranded at second base.

Walck was one of three Rock players who had more than one hit in the game. Junior catcher Ben Bechtol and junior first baseman John Shaffer each added two hits as part of The Rock's nine-hit attack.

Bechtol singled to right with two outs in the bottom of the second inning to ruin Young's no-hit bid, then flared an RBI single to right field one batter prior to Walck's game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.

The second single allowed Shaffer, who had smacked a one-out double to left-center, to score the tying run from second base.

Walck's game-winning hit then gave SRU (14-17-1 overall) its season-best fourth consecutive win and fourth win in five games played in the span of eight days.

Schneider made his first start of the season and deserved a better fate than he got. The freshman right-hander struck out nine, did not walk a batter and scattered four hits over the first seven innings but wound up with a no-decision.

Sophomore righty Anthony Naso relieved Schneider at the start of the eighth inning and The Rock holding a 3-0 lead, but gave up four earned runs on four hits in the next one and two-thirds innings. He stood to be the losing pitcher until Walck's game-winning hit.

Sophomore southpaw Joby Lapkowicz replaced Naso with two outs in the top of the ninth and The Rock holding a 3-2 lead, He was on the mound when Mansfield tied the score at 3-3 and took a 4-3 lead, but wound up getting the win, his first of the season against no losses, thanks to The Rock's last-inning offense heroics.

Young, Mansfield's starting pitcher, allowed one earned run on four hits in the first five and two-thirds innings before two Mountaineer relievers allowed four earned runs on four hits in the final three and one-third innings.

The Rock is idle until Friday, when they open a four-game weekend series at Critchfield Park against NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rival Fairmont State (W. Va.). The teams will meet in a 1 p.m. twinbill Friday and a second 1 p.m. double feature Saturday.
