KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team concluded its time at the Rebel Spring Games Saturday with a 6-1 loss to Wayne State and a 7-0 victory over Northwood. SRU returns home with an overall record of 6-5.
Senior outfielder
Gina Brenzo went 2-for-3 and scored one run to pace the Slippery Rock offense against Wayne State. Freshman first baseman
Breanna Tongel drove in Brenzo for The Rock's only run of the game in the third inning, but WSU already had a commanding five-run lead. Tongel finished the day 1-for-3 with 1 RBI.
Freshman pitcher
Ashley Knight (2-3) suffered the loss after pitching three innings, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one Warrior batter. Junior pitcher
Amy Erickson came on in relief of Knight and recorded two strikeouts in three innings.
Senior pitcher
Shaylee Ianno (4-2) led SRU in its 7-0 blanking of Northwood with another great all-around day. In addition to throwing her second consecutive shutout, Ianno also struck out six batters while allowing just four hits to pick up her 24th career victory. At the plate, Ianno hit her first home run on the way to a three-RBI game.
Junior third baseman
Jenna Geibel hit her second home run in three games, finishing the contest 2-for-3 with two RBI. Brenzo and freshman outfielder
Alaynna Beers both chipped in one hit and one RBI vs. the Timberwolves. SRU's win was its second in as many days against Northwood .
With their time in Florida over, The Rock will now turn their attention to a March 23 doubleheader at Glenville State (3 p.m.). Slippery Rock is scheduled to hold its home-opener March 24 against Mansfield at 1 p.m.
