ERIE, Pa. – Slippery Rock University bounced back from a Game 1 loss to record its most productive offensive game of the season and salvage a split Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division baseball doubleheader action at Gannon University Field.

Gannon (9-9 overall, 1-1 PSAC-W) plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to score a 4-2 win in Saturday's first game.

The Rock (7-11-1 overall, 1-1 PSAC-W) then pounded out 15 hits en route to a 12-5 win in the second game. The win ended a three-game losing skid for the Green and White.

SRU and Gannon close out their four-game season series Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park in Slippery Rock. That will mark The Rock's home debut this spring.

Senior center fielder and team captain Carter Haponski and sophomore shortstop Will Kengor each had three hits in Game 2 and four hits in Saturday's doubleheader to lead The Rock's offensive effort. Kengor had a double and a triple in Game 2.

Freshman left fielder Austin Benshadle had a double and senior catcher Matt Accardi had a triple to round out the list of Rock extra-base hits.

Junior first baseman John Shaffer, one of three Rock players who finished the day with three hits, collected three RBIs to lead SRU in that category.

Senior southpaw Zach Jeney pitched a complete game in Game 1, but was tagged with the loss, which dropped his season record to 1-1.

Jeney, who had not allowed an earned run in 15 innings of work prior to Saturday, allowed three earned runs (four total) on four hits, struck out 10 and walked one in the process of recording his first route-going effort of the season.

Freshman right-hander Garret Peterson (pictured) was SRU's Game 2 starting pitcher and picked up his first win of the season. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked one in four and two-thirds innings of work.

Sophomore John Kovalik allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out one in the final two and one-third innings.

Notes:

Shaffer had one single in Game 1 and two singles in Game 2 to extend his current hitting streak to 11 games … The Green and White's run total in Game 2 surpassed an 11-run effort Feb. 26 in a win at Shippensburg as their highest of the season … Saturday's Game 2 hit total tied the March 13 winning effort vs. Minnesota-Duluth for The Rock's best effort of the season … Saturday's split was the fourth recorded by The Rock in their last four doubleheaders. SRU swept a season-opening doubleheader Feb. 18 from Ohio Valley University of West Virginia, then got swept in its next two twinbills (Feb. 19 vs. Wheeling Jesuit, Feb. 25 by Shippensburg) before its current string of splits.
