KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team lost 11-1 to Caldwell College and 3-2 to Adelphi University Tuesday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee Fla. The losses extend SRU's losing streak to four games and drops its record to 1-4 overall.
After its disappointing 10-run loss to Caldwell, Slippery Rock was eager to get out to a fast start vs. Adelphi. The Rock did just that by scoring two runs in the second inning against Panthers.
With one out in the inning, sophomore first baseman
Breanna Tongel singled to right field followed by a walk from senior DP
Elizibeth Gorges and a single from senior outfielder
Natalie Atkinson to load the bases.
Senior second baseman
Rachel Henderson then showed great plate discipline by drawing a walk to force in SRU's first run of the game.
The Green and White made it 2-0 when freshman outfielder
Lori Beth Nunemaker, who had came in to pinch run for Gorges, scored off of a passed ball.
However, SRU's scoring onslaught was halted by Adelphi pitcher Laurin Watts, who struck out sophomore outfielder
Emily Lobdell and junior catcher
Katie Saluga to end the inning. The Panthers were able to trim Slippery Rock's lead to 2-1 when Amy Ogden scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second before taking the lead for good in the third inning thanks to a two-run double from Meghan Heiser.
The Rock's best shot at a comeback came in the fifth inning. With one out, senior third baseman
Stephanie Collenette pinch hit for Gorges and proceeded to smack a double to center field. After a strikeout by Saluga, senior outfielder
Gina Brenzo singled to advance Collenette to third base. Freshman outfielder
Alaynna Beers was walked to load the bases with two outs, but Watts once again put a stop to an SRU scoring-chance by forcing junior third baseman
Jenna Geibel to fly out to right field for the final out of the inning.
SRU was unable to record a hit the rest of the game and Adelphi hung on for the 3-2 victory to improve its record to 4-2-1 on the season.
Freshman pitcher
Ashley Knight (0-2) suffered the loss for Slippery Rock after giving up three runs, four hits and seven walks. Knight, who also struck out 10 batters, settled down after a rough start, allowing just one hit, two walks and no runs in the final three innings.
Brenzo, Tongel and Atkinson all finished the day 1-for-3 while Collenette doubled in her only at-bat of the game.
Slippery Rock will get a day off Wednesday before continuing its time at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday with contests vs. Minnesota-Moorhead at 1 p.m. and Minnesota-Duluth at 3 p.m. The Rock defeated Moorhead, but lost to Duluth earlier in the week.
