Game 2 boxscore
ABERDEEN, Md. – Shippensburg University scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday afternoon to record a 3-2 win and complete a doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock University in baseball action at the Ripken Baseball Academy.
The Red Raiders rode a three-hit, complete-game shutout pitching effort by ace Nick Umberger to a 1-0 win in the first game.
Saturday's results gave Shippensburg a 5-3 record. The Rock, meanwhile, saw their losing streak reach four games as they fell to 2-4 on the year.
The teams will conclude their four-game season series with a noon doubleheader Sunday in Shippensburg.
Umberger (3-0) struck out six and walked three in his route-going effort to win a duel against Rock ace
Lou Trivino (1-1), who allowed one unearned run on five hits, struck out one and walked four.
Shippensburg scored the only Game 1 run on a pair of singles, a walk and a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning before Umberger and Trivino each threw blanks for the final six innings.
The Rock had a runner in scoring position in the top of the second inning thanks to a one-out double by senior
Lee Foxton (pictured) before Umberger slammed the door on that threat.
Shippensburg got two walks and a single to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, only to have Trivino induce a popout and an inning-ending double-play groundout.
The Rock defense also turned a DP in the bottom of the fifth inning after Shippensburg got a runner on base via a one-out single.
SRU then had a potential rally nipped in the bud in the top of the fifth when junior
Ben Bechtol was gunned down at third base while trying to stretch a leadoff double.
Senior captain
Carter Haponski slapped a one-out single in the sixth inning to account for the third and final Rock hit in Game 1.
The Rock scored a single run in both the third and fourth innings of Game 2 to take a 2-0 lead but were unable to make it stand up for the win.
Senior
Derek Carr got a two-out walk, moved around to third on a single by junior
John Shaffer and scored on sophomore
Kevin Jovanovich's RBI single in the third inning to give SRU a 1-0 lead.
Jovanovich was 2-for-2 in the game to pace a six-hit Rock attack.
The Rock also converted a free pass into their second run as sophomore
Will Kengor got a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Matt Accardi and scored on junior
Brandon Myers' RBI double in the top of the fourth inning.
The 2-0 lead was erased in the bottom of the sixth, when Shippensburg converted four hits and one Rock error into three runs off SRU relief pitcher
John Kovalik.
Kovalik (0-1) was tagged with the loss after he allowed those three earned runs on four hits, struck out three and walked one in the final two innings.
Senior
Zach Jeney was SRU's starting pitcher and struck out six, walked three, hit one batter and allowed only one hit in the first four frames. He left the game with a 2-0 lead but wound up with a no-decision.
Following Sunday's twinbill in Shippensburg, The Rock are idle until March 8, when they will take on Seton Hill University in the opening game of their 10-game spring trip to Lakeland, Fla.
Notes:
Myers' Game 2 RBI gave him a team-high four for the season … Haponski (.350) is the only Rock player hitting better than .300 after six games this spring … Jeney has not allowed an earned run in eight innings pitched, while Trivino has only allowed one earned run in 13 innings for an 0.60 ERA.
