CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- One day after pounding out 17 hits in a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley University, the Slippery Rock University baseball team managed only seven hits in two games Sunday and dropped 3-2 and 6-3 (9 innings) decision to NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rival Wheeling Jesuit University at VA Memorial Park.
The Rock (2-2) collected only three hits in Sunday's first game and were held to four hits in the second game.
Adding salt to the wound was the fact Wheeling Jesuit parlayed four Rock defensive errors into five two-out runs in the top of the ninth inning to record the second-game win.
Senior captain and left fielder
Carter Haponski (pictured) had a single in Game 1 and a double in Game 2, while senior catcher
Matt Accardi had a two-run double and an RBI single in Game 2 to highlight The Rock's lackluster offensive effort.
Sophomore right fielder
Brandon Myers had a double and a run-scoring ground out (6th inning) and senior center fielder
Derek Carr picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for SRU's Game 1 runs.
Sophomore right-hander
Ryan Oglesby was tagged with the Game 1 loss after he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out three in the first five innings. Sophomore righty
John Kovalik allowed one hit and walked one in the final two innings.
Sophomore righty
Anthony Naso was the victim of The Rock's defensive woes in Game 2. He was tagged with the loss after allowing five unearned runs on only one hit, walking two and striking out one in his only inning of work.
Game 2 starting pitcher
Geoff Sanner, a freshman righty, gave up one earned run on five hits, struck out five and walked two in the first five and two-thirds innings. Rookie righty
Kyle Schneider yielded two hits, struck out three and walked two in two and one-third innings in relief of Sanner.
The Rock had a chance to win Game 2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, when they had runners on first and second bases with two outs thanks to a Haponski double and a walk to Carr, but were unanable to get the needed hit to plate the run.
Accardi's RBI single in the fifth inning of Game 2 tied the score at 1-1 and ultimately sent the game into extra stanzas. He doubled home The Rock's final two runs in the bottom of the ninth after Wheeling Jesuit had taken a 6-1 lead on the five unearned tallies in the top of the ninth.
SRU is idle until Saturday, Feb. 25, when they will take on Shippensburg in a noon doubleheader at The Ripken Baseball Academy in Aberdeen, Md.
